Harpeth Rising set to play show to benefit Oxford School
OXFORD – Harpeth Rising is an unapologetic, genre-bending trio of women who fuse folk, newgrass, rock and classical music by combining the instrumental sounds of banjo, violin, cello and foot percussion.
On Saturday, Oct. 25 6 On The Square (6OTS) in conjunction with the Oxford Schools Music and Arts Boosters will present Harpeth Rising beginning at 7:30 p.m. The show will be held at the 6OTS, 6 LaFayette Park in downtown Oxford.
Harpeth Rising named themselves after a river, because they said “water is both dynamic and powerful.” The band is composed of three women– Jordana Greenberg on violin and vocals, Rebecca Reed-Lunn on banjo and vocals and Maria Di Meglio on cello and vocals.
Oxford community relations person Jeanie Peterson described their sound and said, “Hallmarks of their music include expansive three-part harmonies, consummate musicianship, and a deft yet soulful lyrical perspective, weaving together ancient and modern ideas.”
The all-female group met while studying classical music at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. They were drawn together and motivated by their eclectic musical interests.
“We don’t set out to create something different. We just write in a way that is true to ourselves, while trying to always expand and explore the new influences in our lives.” said Greenberg. “We’re aware of genre divisions. We’re just not bound by them.”
Harpeth Rising has toured nationally and internationally for four years, including performances at the Kerrville Folk Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, London Folk Festival, Blissfest, Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour, Music City Roots, The Bluebird, and ROMP Music Festival.
Oxford Music and Arts Boosters encourage the community to show support for Oxford Schools' music and arts programs by attending the fundraiser. Funds raised keep the music and arts programs available to Oxford students. The club said the event not only helps students but also is an opportunity to enjoy a unique performance.
Tickets to the event are $15 (plus a $2 service charge) for those over 18. There is a student discount of $7.50 for those 18 and under. No other discounts apply for this performance.
