Chenango Arts Council places finishing touches on Bi-Annual Gala plans

NORWICH — The Chenango Arts Council will host its 2014 gala event at the Northeast Classic Car Museum the evening of Saturday, Nov. 8.
In keeping with a themed tradition, the bi-annual event, aptly named “Parked Under the Stars,” is sure to pique the interests of automotive enthusiasts and those just looking to rub elbows for a great cause.
Proceeds from the evening will support the Chenango Arts Council’s cultural programming, which includes a performance series, gallery exhibits, funding opportunities for teachers, artists and organizations, scholarships for high school students, classes and workshops, and a community cultural calendar.
“In a nutshell, everything that the Council does to introduce and educate Chenango County in the arts will be directly benefited from funds generated at the event,” said Chenango Arts Council Executive Director Diane Batson-Smith.
New for this year, and for first time in the 14 years of the event's existence, the gala will be hosted at another nonprofit — the Northeast Classic Car Museum located at 25 Rexford St. in Norwich. Arts Council Co-Chair Mary El Emerson said, “The Car Museum has been a wonderful partner in organizing the event.”
The event will begin with a complimentary champagne reception at 6 p.m., and catering service will be provided by the locally-owned Tuller's Catering Service.
Along with delectable fare, the event will also feature a healthy serving of prizes, raffles and a silent auction. A myriad of auction offerings ranging from NY Giants, Syracuse Chiefs and Jerry Seinfeld tickets to massage, limousine and gym memberships will be available for bid.
“This is 'The' gala event of the year, and the general public is encouraged to attend – everyone is welcomed to join us and have a great time,” said Batson-Smith. Additionally, the evening serves as a gauge for the organization, giving Council staff and board members the opportunity to hear first-hand suggestions from community members; information which in turn can be utilized to augment programming featured at the Council throughout the next two years.
“If you are new in the community, [attending] is a really great way to meet new people,” added Batson-Smith.
While in the past the Gala was more of a black-tie affair, organizers encourage attendees to dress up or dress down, but in either case dress to have fun. “The gala has evolved into a more relaxed event for some,” said Emerson, “but it's also a great opportunity to dress up and feel like a movie star.”
“We like the term ‘cocktail part chic,’”said Batson-Smith.
The evening of fun and cocktails will be kept in time by the area's premier party band Splash, and will continue until 11 p.m.
Tickets for “Parked Under the Stars” are $65 per person, and those wishing to attend must RSVP no later than October 30. For more information or to reserve your ticket, contact the Chenango Arts Council at 336-2787 or www.chenangoarts.org.
