Surging Greene blanks Whitney Point

Greene 34, Whitney Point 0
WHITNEY POINT – The Trojans surely would like to have a couple of their early games back.
Greene won for the third time in four games routing Whitney Point on the road Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore running back Luke Erickson had over 300 all-purpose yards, and sophomore quarterback Zach Orzell ran for one touchdown and threw for another.
"The kids felt very comfortable knowing their assignments on offense and defense, and they executed them well," said Greene coach Dave Gorton. "We were physical as well, and that made the difference."
Greene (3-5) racked up 370 yards of total offense and held the Golden Eagles to just 97 total yards.
Orzell scored on an 11-yard early in the second quarter improvising after a blown assignment. That touchdown came after Greene had turned the ball over on its two drives in the first quarter.
"Once we scored that first touchdown, it took the pressure off," Gorton said. "We had great blocking up front all game, and our backs ran through some huge holes."
Orzell's score was the first of three touchdowns in the second quarter. Cole Nelson had an 11-yard TD jaunt, and Erickson returned a punt 57 yards to paydirt.
Erickson ran for 159 yards on 16 carries, caught three passes for 53 yards, and had 89 punt return yards. "Luke was outstanding today; he did it all," Gorton said.
Senior Shawn Brigham scored on an eight-yard run in the third, and Orzell tossed a 21-yard scoring pass to Dylan Barton in the fourth.
Orzell was particularly efficient completing 6 of 11 passes for 120 yards.
"We've been moving the ball all season and not scoring points," Gorton said. "Today, we got the ball into the endzone."

Oxford 33, Unadilla Valley 14
NEW BERLIN – Oxford scored on offense, defense, and special teams – all in the second quarter – to even its record on the season Friday.
The Blackhawks (4-4) have won all but one game on the road this season, and held UV's prolific offense to just 105 yards.
"Our defense is definitely the reason we won the game," said Oxford coach Jeff Newton. "Special teams came up big, and we did just enough on offense to keep the chains moving."
UV's Ryan Postma returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for the touchdown. After that initial shock, Oxford responded with 27 straight points to lead by three scores at halftime.
Garett Sylstra returned a UV fumble two yards for the first score, quarterback Angelo Gonzalez hit paydirt on a one-yard keeper, Nick Neer returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown, and Sylstra had his second touchdown scoring from one yard out.
"What killed us was the punt return, and we had some drops in the passing game," said UV coach Mark Segina. "We didn't prepare as well for this game as we needed to."
The two clubs traded touchdowns in the second half. UV cut Oxford’s lead to 27-14 in second half when Mason Fernette found Hank deGlee on a four-yard TD pass.
Oxford reclaimed its three-score lead in the fourth when Neer threw a 21-yard halfback option pass to Trent Lyons for the final touchdown.
UV's top highlight came from defensive back Nick Stirone, who finished with three interceptions.
Oxford concludes its schedule Thursday when it faces Deposit-Hancock. UV's week nine opponent was not known at press time.

General Brown 40, Sherburne-Earlville 7
DEXTER – For the third straight year, Sherburne-Earlville exited the Section III playoffs in the first round.
General Brown avenged a 40-21 week two loss to the Marauders led by senior all-state running back Zach Pitre.
Pitre, contained in the first meeting by the Marauders, had TD runs of 20 and nine yards, and added a 26-yard TD reception from quarterback Evan Will.
Will also had a TD toss to Dylan Heath and threw for 156 yards in the victory.
"We just gave up too many big plays in the passing game," said S-E coach Mike Jasper, whose club finishes the season with back-to-back losses.
Cody Marango had a four-yard TD run in the third quarter for the Marauders (5-3), who were held to a season-low 187 yards of total offense.
The Lions' Dylan Heath put a stamp on the victory with a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Bainbridge-Guilford 36, Candor 22
CANDOR – When you average 10 yards per play, that's usually a good recipe for success.
The Bobcats (2-6) dug themselves out of a first-half hole scoring 22 unanswered points in the second half to pick up their second win of the season Friday evening at Candor.
"We really did need this, and give the kids credit," said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. "They keep coming to practice and working hard. This was the pay-off."
Dylan Moffit's six-yard TD run in the third quarter and the subsequent two-point conversion tied the game.
The fourth stanza was all Bobcats. Freshman Ben Bivar scored on a 20-yard run, and sophomore quarterback Austin Carr hit paydirt on a seven-yard keeper.
B-G's defense allowed its fair share of yards, but stopped four fourth-down attempts by the Indians in the second half. "It seemed like we made big plays on defense at opportune times," Mattingly said. "On offense, we had a lot of success running our stuff. "Carr did a nice job running our offense, and Dylan Moffitt just runs so hard."
Moffitt had 183 yards rushing and Bivar had a season-best 93.
Carr added two TD passes in the first half to keep his club in the game. He found Bailey Green on an 11-yard scoring toss in the first, then hooked up with speedy Austin Capalupo on a 54-yard score in the second.
