Oneonta mayor’s death confirmed a suicide

ONEONTA — City of Oneonta Mayor Richard died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head on Sat., Oct. 25 at approximately 10:25 a.m., according to Otsego County Coroner James Hurley.
Hurley said Miller's death was ruled a suicide. The 70-year-old shot himself with a registered .22-caliber handgun.
According to the City of Oneonta website, Miller was elected in 2009 and was re-elected in 2013 after running unopposed.
Prior to being mayor, Miller was the ninth president of Hartwick College, the former vice chancellor and chief operating officer of the State University of New York and a decorated Vietnam veteran.
The City of Oneonta and its Common Council said, “We are deeply saddened to report that Mayor Richard P. Miller died unexpectedly. On behalf of the Miller family, it is requested that during this difficult time the privacy of the family be respected.”
