‘Secret Lives’ airs tonight
NORWICH — “This case had mystery, intrigue, scandal and an international twist that would prompt the police to turn to London, England for answers,” said Andrea Canning, Dateline NBC Correspondent.
The case Canning is referring to is the matter of Ganesh R. Ramsaran, who was recently found guilty of murdering his wife Jennifer Ramsaran in December of 2012 in their New Berlin home.
Dateline NBC has covered the case and the trial, and the show titled “Secret Lives” is set to air tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC.
Canning said viewers will, “Hear for the first time from the woman at the center of it all, Eileen Sayles who shares emotional and candid words. She said she spoke to Dateline to apologize and set the record straight.”
Sayles was both the victim’s best friend, and the lover of her best friend’s husband.
Dateline also interviewed the now-convicted killer Ramsaran while incarcerated in the Chenango County Correctional Facility. He remains incarcerated while awaiting sentencing which has been scheduled for 2 p.m., Dec. 1, 2014, at the Chenango County Courthouse.
“While Chenango County is rural, we do have the same problems as more urban areas. It’s really just a matter of frequency,” said lead investigator on the Ramsaran case, Lieutenant Richard Cobb. “Fortunately, the headline-grabbing cases don’t happen here often.”
Canning added the case is one of the most compelling and complex hours she has ever covered. “And it comes from tiny New Berlin,” she said.
“It shows you, you never really know what’s going on with your neighbors no matter where you live,” Canning said.
The Dateline Correspondent also has local roots — Canning’s husband, Tony Bancroft, is from Oxford where is parents and her in-laws, John and Tina Bancroft, live. “I have spent a great deal of time in the area,” said Canning.
“I understand the interest in Jennifer’s case, but hopefully the viewers keep in mind that a local woman was needlessly murdered and her three children are now without a mother,” said Cobb.
Canning added that her father-in-law was Cobb’s fifth grade teacher.
“The interview at the Chenango County Jail with Remy lasted 3 hours. He had a lot to get off his chest and still believes he knows what really happened to his wife Jen,” said Canning.
