NHS changes up annual open house event

NORWICH – The Norwich City School District is inviting parents and students to an open house event that High School Principal Kermit Moyer says will put a new spin on a long-running school tradition.
The NHS parent information night, an annual event that affords parents an opportunity to network with their child’s teacher and learn more about academic programming, will be held from 5:30-7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the high school.
While countless open house events have been held in previous years, Moyer said this year’s event bears two specific goals: increasing parent participation, and spotlighting the academic programs available to the 600-plus students at NHS.
“Our concept is to make our open house look a little different to bring in more parents and families,” Moyer said. “We want parents to use this evening as an opportunity to learn more about what we’re doing to help support their children in pursuing their academic goals.”
The open house event will be preceeded by a soup and salad dinner free to parents and students who would like to attend. Dinner will be followed by a 10-minute welcome and introduction in the high school auditorium and a series of information sessions thereafter, each session lasting approximately 8-10 minutes.
“Essentially, parents, students and families will have the opportunity to rotate from session to session to learn about the different curricular programs that we offer,” said Moyer. Focus will be on student services and core content areas including math, science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, music, art, health, physical education, technology, library education, foreign languages, occupational education and special education.
Said Moyer, “This is a great opportunity for us to share what we offer at their child’s school as we continue to maintain a positive connection between the community and staff.”
The Norwich City School District is reaching out to parents through a variety of channels, including phone messages and through use of the school’s website and social media account. To keep updated on happenings at NCSD, visit norwichcsd.org or find “Norwich City School District” on Facebook.
