‘Spooktacular Haunted Library’ in Oxford Sunday

OXFORD—Haunted houses, creepy corn mazes and ghastly attractions of all sizes are all signs of Halloween weekend in Chenango County. Ghouls and goblins are advised to be on point as the Oxford Memorial Library invites one and all to its annual Haunted House.
Now in its tenth year, organizers are pleased to announce that the spooky event—which boasts two separate age-appropriate attractions at different times—begins at 10 a.m. this Saturday at the Village Library, located at 8 Fort Hill Park.
The Haunted House Halloween Party—for the youngsters— will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second floor Program Room of the library.
But fear not, the return of the Spooktacular Haunted Library for the older crowd returns this year from 6-9 p.m. – as the entire library transforms into a bone chilling fright-fest (and spoiler-alert: everyone goes home with a treat bag).
Originally conceived by Library Clerk Autumn Markowsky, the main attraction is a dark and startling labyrinth up winding stairs flooded with black lights and spiderwebs.
As the brave are led though the dark winding hallways, goblins, ghouls and ghosts greet the unsuspecting as they meander from their nooks and crannies to taunt even the strongest willed.
Fueled by her sheer love of all things Halloween, Markowsky spends weeks preparing and decorating the maze as well as the rest of the library's grounds.
Due to the positive feedback from last year’s addition of the “kid friendly” component to the annual haunted house, library staff are continuing with the Halloween inspired haunt, designed for the younger crowd.
A variety of games, activities, treats and spooky drinks will be offered for those daring enough to show. There is no admission fee, but the community is encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for drop-off which will be added to the Village of Oxford food pantry. To donate or contribute to next year’s haunted house, contact the Oxford Memorial Library at 843-6146.
Nancy Wilcox, Director of Oxford Memorial Library, assures that the haunted house that has evolved into a yearly tradition is still on track to be bigger, better and even more chilling than in past years.
Said Wilcox, “Every year, the haunted house gets a little bigger and more participants come out to enjoy Autumn's hard work.”
“Costumes are welcomed, but not necessary for participation,” she added.
