Broad St. Methodist Church hosts fair trade event

NORWICH — Take a trip around the world with a fair trade sale, an international holiday tea and a chance to reach a helping hand across the ocean on Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6 at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich.
The fair trade sale, organized by the United Methodist Women, will feature items handcrafted by artisans in Third World countries, including jewelry, holiday decorations and home décor.
“Through fair trade, we can change the lives of people we’ll never meet living in some of the poorest parts of the planet,” said event Chairwoman Amy Roth. “In exchange, we get to bring a little piece of faraway lands home in the form of the beautiful objects these artisans produce.”
Additionally, fare from around the globe can be sampledand purchased at the sale. “Our tea includes cookies made with recipes from other countries so you can taste the world, too,” said Roth.
The Fair Trade Sale and International Holiday Tea at Broad Street United Methodist Church is a great opportunity to buy unique, handcrafted Christmas gifts and to spend time with friends enjoying an afternoon tea featuring baked goods from around the world.
The concept of fair trade ensures that artisans are paid a living wage for their work, which trickles down to families affording healthy food, medical care and school fees. According to Roth, it also encourages environmental sustainability and recycling, and helps to preserve local culture by teaching traditional crafts to new generations. For the December sale, the United Methodist Women have partnered with the fair trade nonprofit co-op Ten Thousand Villages.
Roth indicated that all proceeds from the sale will go to support the work of Ten Thousand Villages.
The menu for the holiday tea includes pots of fair trade tea or spiced tea, tea sandwiches and a large variety of cookies from all parts of the world. A free-will donation will be collected for the tea with proceeds benefitting the local and international mission work of the United Methodist Women.
The fair trade event will run from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 in the church at 74 North Broad Street, Norwich. The tea will likewise take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 6. Sweet rolls and coffee will be available earlier on Saturday morning.
