Close call in Oxford

OXFORD – An Oxford family was extremely lucky after a mid-day close call according to Oxford Fire Chief Mike Cobb.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. Chenango County Dispatch reported a trailer fire at 219 Stafford Rd – just more than a mile west of the village line.
Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters observed the charred remains of a bed mattress on the lawn of the property.
According to Cobb, following a call to 911, the residents attempted to put out the fire and removed the burning item from a bedroom.
“The folks are very lucky,” said Cobb. “This situation could have ended much differently for this family,” he added.
After an offensive attack by firefighters and a thorough investigation by a Fire Marshal, Cobb indicates that it was an electric space heater that ignited a nearby blanket which started the fire.
“This is the time of year when we see an increase of dwelling fires caused by alternative heating sources,” said Cobb.
Mutual aid was toned out for a Smithville tanker and a Norwich truck company, both of which were shortly called off by Oxford command.
