Earlville Food Cupboard grant polls open
EARLVILLE – Last week The Evening Sun published a story which highlighted a local food pantry – The Earlville Food Cupboard – which was recently selected from thousands of pantries nationwide for a chance to be awarded a substaintial grant.
The grant was made possible through a “Holiday Makeover” contest sponsored by the Walmart corporation and had well over one thousand entries. Of the entries, the contest was whittled down to 300 contestants, which was then again divided in two to for a short list of 150 finalists.
Pantries that will be awarded the grant – in the unprecedented amount of $20,000 each – will be chosen at the hands of the general public through a web-vote on the Walmart website. Only a mere 75 will win out of the thousands of eentries.
Earlville Food Cupboard which humbly operates from the basement of the Village of Earlville Baptist Church at 9 W. Main St. registered in the competitive grant process in early November and are trying to spred the word to the community in an effort to boost votes. According to the Walmart website, votes can be cast once per day for the remainder of the 10 day contest, which ends at midnight on Friday, Dec. 12.
To cast a vote, visit wm8.walmart.com/HolidayMakeover and search “New York” in the search bar at the bottom of the page. There are only six pantries in New York, making the search easy.
Thuvia Stopford, Director of the Earlville Food Cupboard, indicates that the “Holiday Makeover” grant can be used for a variety of things such as updating facilities, infrastructure upgrades, and placing food on the shelves of the Food Cupboard if awarded.
“We are a very small organization, and this amount of funding would go a long way to ensure food security for the community members that we serve – especially through the winter months,” said Stopford.
Another way to access the polling pace is to follow a link on Stopford's Facebook page which will take voter directly to the voting page.
