Motorists cautioned ahead of winter storm

CHENANGO COUNTY – A severe winter storm that looks to impact the entirety of Chenango County is due to rear its ugly head by midday, tuesday.
Due to a a low pressure system slowly making its way up the east coast, a wintry mix of sleet, snow and rain is expected into the region.
Snowfall accumulations will be heavy through the duration of the event, and county residents are urged to prepare for the possibility of power outages and road closures. The storm will be a slow moving bring with it a lot of moisture with it resulting in snowfall accumulations between 13 and 19 inches according to NOAA forecasts – possibly more across eastern Chenango County.
By early to mid afternoon Tuesday, a wet mix will change to all heavy snow after 3 or 4 p.m. At its heaviest, the snow could pile up at a rate of one to two inches per hour, with a few isolated pockets with an estimated rate of two to three inches per hour later in the day.
With that amount of snowfall comes the increased likelihood of slick road conditions and significantly decreased visibility.
County Department of Public Works Director Shawn Fry said that his department is prepared with 19 trucks ready to take on the storm and three more on standby if needed.
Even with a full staff and more than 20 trucks on the road, motorists are encouraged to take caution while traveling by leaving early, braking lightly and not tailgating and driving aggressively.
Fry indicates that if a state of emergency or road closings within the county do occur, motorists should be prepared in the event that they become stuck due to poor road conditions.
“I would highly recommend that people do not travel in that case, but I also understand that essential employees need to get to work. If people absolutely need to travel, they should prepare a 'survival' kit to have on hand in their vehicle,” said Fry.
Fry also said that if one does become stranded, the best thing they can do is stay in and with their vehicle for safety sake. “During these whiteout-type weather events, it's extremely difficult for anyone – even emergency personnel – to see someone walking up the side of the highway. The best bet is to stay inside your vehicle and wait until emergency personnel arrives,” said Fry.
That being said, motorists are urged to make sure that along with an emergency kit consisting of blankets, a working flashlight and water, drivers should also carry a fully charged mobile phone.
The snow will remain in the forecast until Friday when things begin to wind down.
