QUEENS – Norwich produced better results each day responding to an opening-day loss in the Brother Arnold Tournament with victories on Saturday and Sunday to place fifth in the 32-year-old tournament.
Facing Fort Hamilton Sunday, Michael Oralls, who had four total points in the first two games - all free throws – scored the Tornado’s first six points, and he had 10 in the first quarter as Norwich jetted to an 18-4 lead.
“Our strength today (Sunday) was Michael and our bench play,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “Michael struggled the first day and got in foul trouble, but he was the man today.”
Oralls and reserve Chris Trevisani led Norwich with 13 points apiece, and Zan Stewart scored 11. Norwich had 37 bench points in the win with reserve Jake Walsh scoring eight, and Jordan Vinal along with Tre Bonham netting seven apiece. Walsh saw substantial second-half minutes at the point guard spot, and helped Norwich expand its lead.
“Jake did a great job handling the press; he grew a lot in the last three days,” Collier said.
Coming off a loss, Norwich faced LaSalle on Saturday, and it turned to Jamison Luke for big production. Luke posted a double-double with a career-high 20 points to go with 10 rebounds. Zan Stewart scored 12, while Colin Stewart was a defensive leader totaling six steals and seven deflections.
“Colin scored five points, but that doesn’t describe what he did for us,” Collier said. “He was a great defender, and did all the little things that help you win games.”
In the opener against St. Dominick’s Norwich suffered its first non-playoff game loss since a Dec. 29, 2012 loss to U-E. Despite 21 turnovers, Norwich crawled back into the game late in the third quarter and into the fourth behind Bonham.
Just a sophomore, Bonham scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter to erase a double-digit deficit.
St. Dominic’s Dominic Cotumaccio made four of four free throws in the final quarter to help seal the win.
Luke added 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
“It was tough (for the kids) after the first game because they aren’t used to losing,” Collier said. “We had 21 turnovers, and you don’t win many games when you make that many turnovers. We didn’t handle their pressure well, but we did a lot better the second and third days, and we learned to play under pressure.”
The trip to New York City was a departure from Norwich’s usual season-opening games, and was a large step up in competition. “We saw improvement from the first game to second game, and the second to third, we saw even more improvement,” Collier said. “That’s what we’re looking for.
“On Saturday night we went to Times Square and saw the big Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. It was a huge bonding experience for the team, and you saw the result of that bonding in Sunday’s game.”

SHERBURNE - Tournament MVP, Caitlin Reader of V-V-S, scored seven of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Devils outscored S-E by 13 in the final quarter in Saturday's title game.
Sherburne-Earlville had just six players available for the game due to injury, and that lack of depth took its toll. "They press you full court the whole game, and it really wore us down," said S-E coach Karen Mulligan of Saturday’s final.
Too, Marauders center Lilly Berg was plagued with foul trouble, and sat significant minutes in the second and third quarters.
Savannah Irwin had 17 points to lead S-E, and Berg finished with 12.
Bainbridge-Guilford rebounded in the consolation game building an 18-point lead over UV in a 51-31 victory.
Megan Palmatier scored 17 points to pace the Bobcats, Morgan Bullis had 12, and Taylor Palmatier scored 10.
Breanna Christian scored nine points to lead UV.
Sherburne-Earlville roared out of the gate taking a commanding 19-2 in the first quarter in Friday’s first-round victory over UV.
Irwin finished with a season-high 22 points for S-E hitting five three-pointers. Irwin scored 11 of her team’s 19 points as the Marauders constructed a 19-2 advantage. Berg scored 16 points and had 15 rebounds in the contest. “They’re experienced (Berg and Irwin), and we expect them to do that,” Mulligan said.
The Red Devils rolled past B-G in Friday’s opening game. Reader had 19 points, seven of those in a 19-3 second quarter that created a 20-point halftime advantage.

Gouverneur Duals
GOUVERNEUR – Norwich was forced to juggle its roster due to a short-handed lineup giving up three or four forfeits in every match as it finished with a 2-3 record in Saturday’s Gouverneur Duals.
After losing to eventual champion Canastota 42-38 in its opening match, the Tornado beat Holland Patent, 49-30 and the host team, 43-36. In rounds four and five, Peru topped the Tornado, 57-23, and South Jefferson closed the day with a 48-34 win over Norwich.
Dalen Geislinger, Tristan Rifanburg, and Frank Garcia had unblemished days for Norwich. Geislinger (113) garnered perhaps the marquee win of the day for Norwich beating defending Section III champion Trey LaFlamme of South Jefferson, 8-3.
“As a team, we’re right there,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “In dual meets, we just can’t fill all of the weights. When you face good teams, you need to fill all 15 weight classes. But we’re going to compete, and the guys we’re putting out there are wrestling well.”
Norwich travels to Windsor Tuesday.
