Y kids get into the spirit of giving
NORWICH – The Norwich YMCA preschool program is instilling the spirit of giving to students starting at a young age.
Throughout the month of December, youngsters in the YMCA preschool program have been placing presents under their “Giving Tree” set up in the classroom at the YMCA. But the presents collected have a significant purpose that go beyond traditional gift giving, explained Kaitlin Korver, YMCA preschool teacher.
“The giving tree is there to remind us to be grateful for what we have,” Korver said. “We have been asking parents to donate toys and food for the Giving Tree.”
Toys collected under the Giving Tree will be donated to the Chenango County chapter of Toys for Tots while food will go directly to the food pantry at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich for distribution. The purpose, said Korver, is to teach kids the importance of giving to those in need during the holidays – and every day.
“The children in my class have been really interested in the idea of giving to others and being nice to others, which is why I decided to take it a step further and ask them to be nice and helpful toward others and not just the ones in our class,” said Korver.
