SOUTH EDMESTON – Chobani is aiding the hungry by donating their yogurt to those in need, and the first one million cups departed the South Edmeston plant Thursday.

“There will be 12 fully packed 53-foot trucks in order to make the delivery of yogurt,” said Vice President of Communications Michael Gonda. “Almost every flavor will be included.”

Gonda said even seasonal flavors including Apple Cinnamon and Pumpkin will be in the shipment to be sent to the needy.

“This is a very joyous season, but there are a lot of people in need right now,” said Gonda. “We’re giving back to those states who have given to us.”

City Harvest will receive the first one million cups of yogurt. City Harvest was founded in 1982 and is the world’s first food rescue organization. The organization’s mission is to “end hunger in communities throughout New York City” through education and food rescue (excess food from restaurants) and distribution of food to those in need. Per the organization’s website, it is dedicated to helping to feed the more than 1.4 million New Yorkers that are facing hunger.

Chobani employees began loading the yogurt into the trucks at 1 p.m. on Thursday at its plant in South Edmeston. The yogurt is to arrive Friday.
