Arts Council announces winners of Grants for Teachers program
NORWICH – Realizing that arts education is often times the first to go when state and local funding cuts happen, the Chenango Arts Council is lending a helping hand to educators through another round of its annual Grants for Teachers program.
Each year, the Chenango Arts Council allocates funds that Program Director Michelle Connelly says helps teachers cut through minimal red tape and allows for maximum flexibility. A total $5,284 was disbursed through the program for 2015, helping to fund initiatives ranging from field trips to musicals.
“This is a program that has been designed by teachers for teachers,” said Connelly. “Of all the programs that are grants related, I feel that this gives the biggest bang for the buck.”
Grants for Teachers is funded through private donations, most of which are raised through the annual Arts Council pig roast held every summer. Additional funding this year was given by Friends of the Arts Council, Walmart, ACCO of Sidney, and Community Bank. In all, more than $6,000 was raised for the program in 2014, helping to fund 12 of a total 13 applicants for the coming year. Remaining funds will be used to kick-off next year’s Grants for Teachers program.
Recipients for 2015 include:
• BOCES: $500 for a public art sculpture
• Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton: $200 for purchase of print disability software
• Greene Middle School: $400 for purchase of guitars, case, straps and foot rests
• Holy Family School, Norwich: $369 for a trip to Anderson Theatre for a Junie B. Jones production
• Gibson Primary School, Norwich: $500 for a trip to Farmer’s Museum/Lippitt Farmstead
• Gibson Primary School, Norwich: $500 for a trip to Harpursville Animal Adventure Park
• Gibson Elementary School, Norwich: $350 for a trip to Wolf Mountain Nature Center
• Norwich Middle School: $500 for purchase of an industrial clay extruder
• Norwich High School: $500 for a trip to New York City museums
• Oxford Primary School: $500 to support the school musical, “United We Stand”
• Oxford Middle School: $465 for a circle weaving project
• Oxford High School: $500 for purchase of a piano keyboard package
“This is a program the Arts Council started doing in 2003,” Connelly said, citing the nearly $30,000 granted over the program’s 11-year history. “We decided it was beneficial to fund classrooms with their needs that they share directly with us. It’s nice to see money help build a program that might not otherwise be in the school ... The projects eligible for funding are limited only to the imagination, invention and creativity of the applicant.”
Teachers interested in applying for funding through the next round of Grants for Teachers are encouraged to submit a narrative of their project to the Chenango Arts Council. For more information, call the Arts Council at 336-2787 or visit www.chenangoarts.org.
