Norwich cruises into Stop DWI finals

Norwich 60, Owego 35
BINGHAMTON – Norwich cruised into the region one finals in the Mirabito Stop DWI Holiday Classic Sunday afternoon rolling past Owego for the second time in five days.
Colin Stewart was Norwich’s top scorer bucketing a season-high 13 points, and that included 3-for-3 shooting on three-point attempts. Senior Zan Stewart added 11 points, and was the best player on the floor, said head coach Tom Collier.
“We got up 18 or 20 early in the second quarter, and then they made a little run at us,” Collier said. “Colin made a big three for us to stop their momentum.”
Norwich was especially dominant in the first and third quarters when its starting unit saw its most minutes on the floor. During those to quarters, NHS held a 33-5 advantage. To Owego’s credit, it outscored Norwich in the final quarter, although the game’s outcome was no longer in doubt. “Coming off that win on Tuesday (89-18), we knew Owego was a better team than that, and we knew they wouldn’t shoot 14 percent in this game,” Collier said. “Owego may have been outmanned tonight, but they played hard and competed the whole game against us.”
Collier singled out a defining play in the fourth quarter as his team’s play of the game. With about five minutes left in the game and Norwich’s ahead by 25 points, junior forward Jamison Luke had the ball stolen from him near midcourt. As Owego’s Brandon Hathaway gathered the loose ball, Luke made a full-out dive for the ball, and he got two hands on the ball to force a jump ball.
“That play epitomized what we preach to the team,” Collier said. “We’re up 25 points and a two-point layup for them wouldn’t have mattered because we had the game well in hand. But Jamison sacrificed his own body so that they could not score two points. He refused to be beaten; to give that basket up. Our whole bench erupted, and it really energized our team.”
Norwich plays Kennedy Catholic Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

More Than a Game Foundation Tournament
Norwich 60, Skaneateles 55
SYRACUSE – Norwich preserved its unbeaten record with a furious fourth-quarter rally Saturday afternoon against Section III’s Skaneateles.
The Tornado (6-0) struggled offensively in the first, and trailed 24-9 at one point before finishing the first half on an 8-1 run to close the deficit to eight.
“We shot the ball about as bad as we possibly could in the first half,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “We committed ourselves to getting to the rim, getting easy baskets, and then working back to the arc. In the fourth, we finally made a couple of jump shots, and they really struggled to guard us.”
Norwich trailed 40-34 after three quarters, but made a big offensive push in the fourth behind Savannah Williams, Makenzie Maynard, Shelby Benjamin, and Carin Kuhn. All four players had at least five points in the final quarter with Williams and Maynard scoring six apiece, while Kuhn and Benjamin split five points down the middle. Kuhn bagged a key three-pointer, and Maynard was 4-for-4 from the foul line.
“I was very proud of our guts tonight,” Bennett said. “There were a lot of situations where each team went on runs, and our girls never once panicked. I think the amount of games that this team has played together at this point is a huge advantage for us as a team. There are very few situations that we have not been in as a group.”
Benjamin led Norwich with 15 points, Williams scored a season-high 14, while Maynard added 11 and Meghan Komendarek scored nine. Norwich plays at Baldwinsville Jan. 3.
