NPD: Stay safe this New Year’s Eve
NORWICH – As the year end celebrations begin, the Norwich Police Department offered tips to stay safe this New Year’s Eve.
Assistant Chief of Police Scott Burlison said the most important thing for those indulging in celebrations to remember is don’t drink and drive.
“Most people are getting the hint,” said Burlison, noting that arrests for drunk driving have reduced, which he attributed to the increase in education on the consequences. “The education is getting out there. People are realizing the danger and the costs of drinking and driving, so most develop a plan to get home.”
Burlison added that the loss of personal items is also common.
“Keep your valuables with you, such as your purse, wallet, phone and money,” he said. He suggested that party-goers with smart phones create a lock code for their phone if they don’t already have one, and also activate an app that could track the device if it’s misplaced or stolen.
“Stay in a group,” Burlison suggested. “It’s safer to not go out alone, but with your friends.” He stressed that if a friend overindulges in alcohol, don’t leave that friend alone. If one gets sick due to an overindulgence of alcohol, Burlison said it’s dangerous as one could choke on their own vomit, which could lead to death.
Another tip offered was to not leave drinks unattended – whether at a bar or a party. Be sure bottled or canned drinks are opened from a sealed container, and do not leave it out of sight.
“People these days are so absorbed in their phones that they are not aware of their surroundings,” said Burlison. “That can be dangerous.” He suggested individuals make sure they know what’s happening around them at all times.
Burlison explained that while having a plan A to get home at the end of the night is great, it is just as important to have a plan B.
“Call the cab companies to see when they’re running. If a cab isn’t available, have a friend or family member who can serve as a designated driver for the evening,” he said. And if walking home, be sure to do so in a group, he said, and keep your head up from your phone to know what’s happening in the vicinity surrounding.
“Drinking 101 is to not go out on an empty stomach,” said Burlison. “Make sure you have a hearty meal and drink in moderation.”
For those who are going out to celebrate, Burlison said to be sure to dress for the weather. As an example, Burlison described a possible situation where the designated driver’s car breaks down, and the temperature is below freezing. “Make sure you have winter clothing,” he said.
“Be sure to let someone know where you’re going, whether you go out in a group or decide to go out alone,” said Burlison. “Call or text someone if you deviate from your plan, because we all know how plans can change and people go from place to place.”
For those who plan to celebrate with beverages while staying at their homes, Burlison said to be sure all candles are out, tree lights are unplugged, and other flammable items are regarded at the end of the night.
In the event of an emergency, be it a fall or potential alcohol poisoning, call 911.
