Norwich, S-E win two titles apiece at Windsor wrestling tourney

WINDSOR – Norwich and Sherburne-Earlville each crowned two champions, and Norwich was second overall in scoring at the 58th Annual Windsor Christmas Tournament, completed Tuesday night.
B-G/Afton/Harpursville’s Chris Cirigliano gave his club its lone championship, and the Bears were two spots back in fourth out of 29 teams entered in the longest-running high school wrestling tournament in New York.
Huntington edged the Purple Tornado by a mere three points, and did so by virtue of four finalists – two winning titles.
Purple Tornado seniors Tristan Rifanburg (145) and Frank Garcia (152) won championships to carry their team into the number two spot. Rifanburg won a 6-2 decision over Nate Grubham of Whitney Point handing Grubham his first loss of the season. Garcia (152) repeated his Clyde Cole finals victory over B-G/A/H’s Madison Hoover taking a 10-0 major decision.
The Marauders’ Jack Buell (195) and Garrett DuVall (220) validated their number one seeds. Buell avenged an early-season loss at the Clyde Cole to Unatego’s Riley Hanrahan taking a major decision in the semifinals, then went on to beat Towanda’s Dakota Manning, 9-3, in the finals.
“What happened in the Clyde Cole is that (Jack) just shot straight in, and we talked to him about taking better angles,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “I don’t think people realize how good of a wrestler Jack is on the mat. He took (Riley) down in the second period and got some back points. He wrestled a smart match.”
DuVall, coming off a fall injury, continued to round into championship form and remaining unbeaten on the season beating Deposit-Hancock’s Zach Gifford in the finals, 5-2. “We entertained the idea of Garrett moving up to 285, but he’s wrestling so well now at 220,” Hicks said. “We’ve been telling Garrett for years to shoot, and when he does that and scores, he’s tough to beat. I believe he had eight takedowns in four matches.”
Cirigliano (113) also kept his season slate perfect beating Huntington’s well regarded John Arceri, 3-1. Cirigliano won the match with an overtime takedown.
