Local man to give presentation on Little Merrit's Tomb
GUILFORD—On Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, from 7 p.m. To 8 p.m., at the Guilford Town Hall, there will be a presentation focused on Little Merrit's Tomb and the Beardsley Cemetery, located in Oxford.
Norwich man, Stefan Foster, has devoted much time and effort over the past year and a half to restore Little Merrit's Tomb and the Beardsley Cemetery and to preserve the history of the site.
On Monday evening, Foster will be giving an inside look at all the history attached to the tale of Little Merrit and all he has learned throughout his work with the site.
On Dec. 15, 1865, eight year old Merrit Beardsley succumbed to sickness and passed away. In honor of the dying boys' wish, a window was placed in his grave so that the sunlight could always reach the boy. This “grave with a window” has been remembered for generations because of its unique feature. The burial site and Little Merrit's story has lived on in the hearts of many area residents.
