11 nominees vie for nine positions on New Berlin Library board
NEW BERLIN – On Monday, Jan. 12, 2014, The New Berlin Associated Library will hold an election for all nine of its library board seats.
After years of non-compliance with state law, the New Berlin Library Board of Trustees was mandated by the State Board of Education to hold the election for all nine board members. The state also decreed that the election will be overseen by the Four County Library System.
Anyone at least 18 years of age and who is a card-holding member of the New Berlin Library is welcome to vote. Each voter will be able to vote for nine candidates. The election will be held from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. At the New Berlin Library. For those unable to vote on Jan. 12, absentee ballots are available at the library. Absentee ballots are due, by mail, no later than Jan. 12.
On Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at 6 p.m., there will be a meet and greet of the candidates in the New Berlin Library community room. This event is open to the public. Per a press release from the New Berlin Library, here is an overview of the candidates running for the board:
George Anderson is a resident of New Berlin Village, a library card holder, and an active library patron. He holds a BA in Secondary Education and a MS in Special Education. Mr. Anderson is a former teacher of Social Studies and Special Education at a high school in Long Island. Currently Mr. Anderson is a composer/musician of soundtracks for films, TV, and radio.
Dominick Priola has been a resident of New Berlin for over 17 years. He is employed as a high school math teacher. Dominick has a BA in Mathematics and Physics and a MAT in Secondary Education. He is an avid reader, chess player, and understands the importance the library plays in our community. Mr. Priola hopes to work to achieve a higher level of transparency in finances and leadership at the New Berlin Library.
Jacqueline Mineo was a board member on the current board for 1 1/2 years. She has tirelessly been working to bring the library into compliance with all state regulations and higher fiscal transparency. She states that "libraries have always been a part of my life."
Angelica Schmidt and her husband homeschool their three children. Ms. Schmidt states "I have been very impressed by the helpful, knowledgeable and creative staff at the New Berlin Library. They have provided an amazing selection of material for the community, and have hosted such wonderful events. I would love to participate and assist in ensuring that the library continues to thrive."
Edward Caputo has been a full time resident of Otsego County for 4 years and before that he was a part time resident for over 20 year. He holds a BS in Wildlife Biology and a MS in Medical Biology. He has professional certification and registry: BB, SBB, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. He was employed for 27 years at Nassau County Medical Center in the Department of Pathology and Labs. He is now retired and perusing personal interests and hobbies. Mr. Caputo states that he "learned many years ago that the New Berlin Library is a valuable and necessary resource to our area. It needs active participation from its patrons so it can grow and serve the community in the best way possible."
Darla Smith has lived in New Berlin for 11 years. She is an avid reader and has been an active patron of the library for 11 years. She hopes to help the new library board achieve compliance with the library's charter and state regulations. Ms. Smith states "a library board should be open and honest."
Chris Gatti has lived in the town of New Berlin for 12 years and recently moved to the village upon his retirement. Mr. Gatti is a lifelong advocate of learning through reading. He would like to serve on the Library Board "to preserve this local treasure and to strengthen its function to our community."
Donna Wells has been a New Berlin "library card holder since the early 1980's and has watched the library grow and provide additional services." She has served on a not for profit board as a treasurer for over 18 years. Mrs. Wells feels she can share her expertise with the new board as she has a working knowledge of how libraries are supposed to operate, having served as a treasurer for a village that has a library for 5 years. If elected, Ms. Wells plans to use her bookkeeping and accounting experience to achieve an atmosphere of honesty and transparency in the library's finances.
Kathleen Mechan has been a resident of Edmeston since 1989. She has been an active patron of the New Berlin Library since 1991. She is an LPN with a degree from Winthrop School of Nursing. Mrs. Mechan says she realized that change was needed at the library. She states "It is a wonderful library and with a new, active board it could become even better."
Raymond Adamson is originally from Glastonbury, Connecticut. He was an aircraft engineer for 10 years and a dairy farmer for 40 years. He currently works for the USDA. Mr. Adamson has 8 children, 16 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
William Fliedner is also nominee for a seat. At the time this article was written he was not available for comment.
