Eastern States Classic
LIBERTY – Norwich seniors Tristan Rifanburg and Frank Garcia each finished in second place, and Sherburne-Earlville junior Jack Buell wrestled back for third at the prestigious Eastern States Classic at Sullivan Community College this past weekend.
Rifanburg (145) won four matches over the two days before falling to nationally-ranked Tommy Dutton of Rocky Point, 10-3. Dutton scored an early throw and back points building a 5-0 lead within the match's first 30 seconds. "We were pressing after that to get on the board, and it just snowballed," said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. "We don't like to (press). We like the set the pace and tempo."
Garcia dropped a 4-3 decision to Sachem East's Jakob Restrepo. Restrepo recording a first-period takedown, but Garcia was never out of the match easily escaping. "They were back on their feet for the third period, we just came up a point shy," Hagenbuch said.
Last season, the only losses for Rifanburg and Garcia came in this tournament. Both went on to win Division II state titles. "If we're going to take a loss, we'd rather it be now than the end of the season," Hagenbuch said.
Buell, who continues to improve this season, entered the tournament as the number eight seed, but wrestled well above that seeding. His only loss came to the overall champion and a defending state champion, Nate Rose of Eagle Academy, by a 5-3 count.
From there, Buell won three more wrestleback matches including a pin of General Brown's Ricardo Dawkins for third. Buell won five of six matches over the event. "He is wrestling smart, keeping good body position, and is staying focused on his next match," said S-E coach Bim Palmer of Buell. "People are getting a good idea of how well Jack can wrestle and what his capabilities are."
Cazenovia Invitational
CAZENOVIA – Oxford's Garett Sylstra and Garyn Huntley won individual titles at this past weekend's Cazenovia Invitational.
For Sylstra, it was his first tournament title this season. Sylstra edged Herkimer's Collin Treen, 8-6, in the 145-pound final. Huntley, who has just one loss this season, pinned Cazenovia's Daniel Phillips in 5:29 in the 220-pound championship.

GREENE - Odessa-Montour outtouched Greene at the finish line in the meet-closing 400-meter freestyle relay to edge the Trojans in Thursday night's meet.
O-M won the final race by a mere 35 hundredths of a second, and five of the 11 events were decided by one second or less, said Greene coach Mike Platta.
"We've had two meets come down to the last event," Platta said. "The first one we won, and the second one we did not," Platta said. "The last race was the way the evening was. It was an incredibly exciting meet."
Odessa-Montour claimed wins in the first six events before Scott Lord earned a win for Greene in the 500 freestyle. The Trojans followed that with a victory in the 200 free relay, and Liam Reid won the 100 backstroke.
"This meet will build character, and we'll put that in the bank so we'll be able to withdraw that later in the season when we need it," Platta said.
Greene (1-2-1) hosts Windsor Tuesday.
