Drunk driver allegedly crashes stolen truck in Sherburne
SHERBURNE – Local authorities said they witnessed a drunk driver crash a stolen truck head on into another moving vehicle Tuesday.
On Jan. 13 at approximately 7 p.m., the Chenango County Sheriff's Office 911 Center received a call from a Norwich resident reporting that his pick-up truck had been stolen by a family member 20 minutes earlier.
At approximately the same time that day, a Chenango County Sheriff's Office deputy and Village of Sherburne Police Department officer assisted in the removal of a tractor trailer out of a ditch off State Route 12 near Shawler Brook Road in the Town of Sherburne. The New York State Department of Transportation was directing traffic during the removal of the tractor trailer.
While authorities were assisting in the removal of the tractor trailer, a pick-up truck came on the scene, drove around the northbound traffic barrier and crashed head on into a vehicle heading southbound.
Jeremy M. Sawyer, 38 of Norwich was operating the pick-up truck that struck the southbound vehicle. The southbound vehicle was operated by Jeffrey VanCourt, 43 of Sherburne.
Members of the New York State DOT rushed to assist VanCourt and his female passenger. Authorities rushed to the assistance of Sawyer whose truck was on fire.
Sawyer was unable to exit the vehicle, so authorities pulled open the passenger door and safely helped him out of the vehicle. The CCSO deputy and a New York State DOT employee used fire extinguishers to put out the flames which had consumed the entire front end of Sawyer's truck.
The female passenger of VanCourt’s vehicle was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. VanCourt and Sawyer were treated at the scene.
During the investigation of the accident, authorities allegedly determined that Sawyer’s vehicle was the same one that had been reported stolen from the Town of Norwich earlier that day.
Authorities also allege Sawyer –who is currently on parole for a previous DWI conviction– was intoxicated when he drove the stolen pick-up into VanCourt's vehicle.
Sawyer was arrested by the CCSO. He was charged with the class E felonies of driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the first degree and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the second degree.
He was also ticketed for unsafely moving from his lane, improperly passing, refusing to take a breathalyzer test and operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.
Sawyer was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 cash bail.
He is to reappear in court at a later date. Further charges are pending against him.
