Mary Poppins to fly onto the NHS stage in 2015
NORWICH – Norwich High School's announced that its spring musical production for 2015 will be the Disney and Cameron MacKintosh musical, “Mary Poppins.”
Norwich High School musical director, Mark Sands, announced that “Mary Poppins” will be the most challenging production that the troupe has staged since “Phantom of the Opera.”
“Mary Poppins” has been the primary choice for production for two years now, said Sands, and has just become available for high school production on Oct. 15, 2014. Norwich High School then received its contract with Music Theatre International, in New York City, to license the show on Oct. 17, 2014. As with “The Phantom of the Opera” in 2011, NHS will be one of the first schools in the world to stage “Mary Poppins.”
After 22 years as musical director at NHS, Sands has announced that “Mary Poppins” will be his last production. He said that is is time to let somebody else take over. But as his last show with the troupe, he wants this year's production to go off with a bang. If all goes as planned, audiences will witness something that they have never seen before on the NHS stage – flying. Both Mary Poppins and Bert the Chimney Sweep will soar above the NHS stage. According to press release, “While Mary Poppins flies in and out of several scenes, Bert will dance around the stage's proscenium opening, upside down.” To help with the flying effects we have contracted with ZFX Flying Effects, a theatrical flying effects and equipment company out of Louisville, Ky.
