B-G grad qualifies for Olympic Trials
WICHITA, Kan. – Bainbridge-Guilford graduate, Chris Burnett, earned a spot in the 2016 Olympic Trials in Los Angeles after meeting the qualifying time for the marathon in a recent USA Track and Field-sanctioned event.
Burnett, a senior Exercise Science major a Wichita State, earned his qualifying spot running a half marathon (13.1 miles). The cutoff time, Burnett said, was one hour and five minutes. Burnett finished just under the benchmark timing 1:04.24.
"That was my first-ever half marathon, and before I ran, I didn't expect to qualify," Burnett said. "I kind of knew halfway through the race that I had a chance, and I just tried to push through. I knew exactly the pace I needed."
Burnett ran cross country and track and field in the fall and spring at B-G, and bridged those seasons as a standout wrestler on the B-G/Afton wrestling team. He attended SUNY Delhi before transferring to Wichita State two years ago. With his cross country eligibility exhausted this past fall, he decided to train his distance running, something he considers his first love over wrestling.
"I started running in the seventh grade, and I kind of always was good at it," Burnett said. "I got a lot better at the end of high school, and decided I wanted to pursue it in college."
After he graduates in May, 2015, Burnett said he is putting off going to physical therapy school so he can train for the Olympic Trials. While he knows he is probably toward the tail-end of the qualifiers for the race, he believes there is still room for improvement.
"I honestly don't think I'm close to my potential," Burnett said. "I've always been bitten by injuries that interrupted my training. This past fall is the first time I've avoided the injuries. If I can stay injury-free the next year and a half, I think I can surprise myself and do some pretty good things."
