Norwich 55, Chenango Forks 42
CHENANGO FORKS – Unlike its first meeting with Chenango Forks, Norwich was not able to run away from the Blue Devils.
Norwich used a strong third quarter to open up a 12-point lead, and improved its record to 10-2 on the season Thursday.
Shelby Benjamin scored 13 points for Norwich, six coming in the first half when the Blue Devils made a run at the Tornado to close the margin to 28-24 at the half. Bridget Murphy also came up big off the bench scoring seven of her nine points in the second quarter.
“They played much better offensively, and we weren’t able to turn them over nearly as much as the first time we played them,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett of Forks. “That allowed them to get back and defend us in the halfcourt.”
Chenango Forks made a mini-run early in the fourth to close the Norwich lead to single digits. Benjamin and Meghan Komendarek each had five for Norwich in the fourth quarter to re-establish command.
“I was proud of my kids for executing in the tough spots when they made runs at us in the middle of the second quarter and the beginning of the fourth,” Bennett said.

Norwich 45, Sidney 18
NORWICH – Norwich senior Frankie Garcia, picked up career win number 201 earning a forfeit victory against a sparse Sidney lineup Thursday night.
Garcia joined teammate Tristan Rifanburg in the 200-win club earlier this week, the first time in Norwich wrestling history in which two 200-win wrestlers were on the same team.
As for the matchup with the Warriors, only six matches were contested on the mat with the Tornado winning four of those. Carter Hubbard (132) won by pin in 21 seconds, Dustin Marvin (126) made it two straight victories this week with a decision; Zach Mills (113) won by pin in 1:01, and Dalen Geislinger (120) bumped up a weight class to win by fall in 3:26.
“We looked better than we did the other night, and that’s the important part,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “Going into the Section IV Duals, we got some guys some rest, and got some new guys coming into the lineup some more mat time. We hope we’re headed in the right direction.”
The Section IV Duals are this weekend with Norwich earning a first-round bye. The Tornado face the winner of Greene and Vestal Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Chenango Forks High School. Semifinals and finals are slated for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
