Christmas Classic organizers present donation
NORWICH — A charity event spawned in 2013 by local John Kampe made a sizable monetary contribution to The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Wednesday.
While the concept has remained much the same, the event that has been held on Christmas evening for two years is now gaining momentum, participants and admiration among the community.
“It all started as an event for people without a place to go on Christmas,” said organizer John Kampe in a December interview. “Then it blossomed from there into a fundraiser.”
Kampe and his Annual Christmas Classic recently partnered with well-known event organizer Ryan Revoir who is looking forward to expanding upon the success of the past two events with Kampe.
“The idea is to grow the event, give it a much larger presence among community members and turn it into something bigger than it currently is all in the name of raising funds for Relay for Life,” said Revoir. “Johnny [Kampe] and I are discussing ways to bring local companies on board to make that a reality. The Christmas Classic is a great way to get the community behind raising awareness and supporting the Relay for Life.
This year, the team worked in conjunction with Park Place Sports Bar & Grill, who hosted the event in addition to donating 20 percent of sales during the Classic.
On Wednesday evening Kampe and Revior along with Dee Anne Cirello – a representative of Park Place – presented their contribution of nearly $700 to Lesa Babcock — Captain of the Snyder's Striders Relay for Life Team.
“We were able to raise about $500 in tips on Christmas night thanks to the support of everyone that came out for the event, and the donation by the Cirello family was more than generous” said Revoir.
“Obviously, cancer has touched someone in all of our lives, and what better day to donate to a cause that tries to combat this awful disease,” said Kampe.
Revoir reiterated Kampe's sentiment and agreed that everyone has been effected by cancer in one way or another making the Christmas Classic a great way to get involved in supporting the American Cancer Society.”
Said Babcock, “The funds generated by the Christmas Classic represents a substantial kick-start to Snyder's Striders annual Relay campaign. As someone who has experienced the tragedy of cancer on a personal level – and seen first hand what the ACS and Relay for Life does to reach out to those in need – I'm very grateful to all those who made the contribution possible.”
