Norwich honors seniors with win over Forks

Norwich 51, Chenango Forks 27
NORWICH – Norwich honored its four seniors, and rallied from a 24-point hole to capture a meet victory over Chenango Forks Wednesday in its final home match of the season.
The proceedings before the wrestling commenced noted the accomplishments of outgoing seniors Tristan Rifanburg, Frank Garcia, Trey Muserallo, and first-year senior Stephen Kuhn. Rifanburg, Garcia, and Muserallo have nearly 500 combined wins during their long varsity careers, and Rifanburg and Garcia have racked up three state titles and seven Section IV championships between them.
Rifanburg and Garcia didn’t disappoint on the mat either with each recording pins in less than two minutes of combined time. “It’s not just about the wins and losses,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch of his standouts. “It’s their leadership and all of the intangibles we see in practice every day. They’re great kids.”
Norwich lost the first five matchups to the Blue Devils, the last two by forfeit at 220 and 285. From there, it was almost all Norwich.
Following a forfeit win at 99 pounds, Norwich’s Nick Glanville (106) pinned Guari Reyes in 1:54; Ty Rifanburg (120) added a pin; Carter Hubbard (126) won by technical fall; Cole Rifanburg (132) earned a pin; Nick Murphy (138) rode out a 10-0 major decision; while Brennan Slater (145), Tristan Rifanburg (152), and Garcia (160) piled on the points with pins.
Hagenbuch was not concerned about the early deficit, and based on where the match started (170 pounds), he knew he would be giving up some points before getting to the meat of his lineup. “If we get the kids to wrestle the way they are capable, we’re a pretty tough team to beat,” Hagenbuch said.
Norwich competes in the STAC Tournament Friday and Saturday at Johnson City, then wraps up its dual meet season next Tuesday at Greene.
