Oxford FFA receives FFA: Food For All grant from National FFA Organization to help fight hunger

OXFORD – The Oxford chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) was recently awarded $2,500 to aid in its participation in the national FFA's Food For All program. The nationwide initiative regularly allocates grant money to local FFA chapters to support year round service-learning projects that address local hunger needs.
Looking ahead to 2015, the Oxford FFA will continue in the fight against food insecurity by offering processing equipment rental to community members that process their home raised poultry humanely, and safely.
According to Crystal Aukema, Advisor of the Oxford chapter, the Oxford FFA youth will also be raising poultry for processing. The organization will donate a portion of the poultry to the Taste & See Soup Kitchen located in Oxford. “The main goal for this project is to allow the community to become self-sufficient and fight hunger by providing the means to raise and process a valuable protein source,” said Aukema. Community members are encouraged to grow their own poultry and set a date to rent the equipment with the group.
Food For All Grants are sponsored by a number of businesses including CF Industries, Elanco, Mainsource, Tractor Supply Company and Tyson as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. On a national level, the program provided nearly $330,000 to FFA chapters in 39 states and the Virgin Islands.
Additionally, the Food For All grant program is part of the National FFA Organization’s Feeding Our World – Starting at Home platform. More information about the program can be found at FFA.org/foodforall.
The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 610,240 student members who belong to one of 7,665 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Community members interested in fighting hunger with the Oxford FFA or wiching to make appointments for equipment rental chapter should contact Aukema at caukema@oxac.org or by phone at 607-843-2025.
