Norwich weathers stiff challenge from Black Knights

Norwich 63, Windsor 52
WINDSOR – If there is a better four-win team in Section IV out there, Norwich coach Tom Collier would like to see it.
Norwich weathered a tough test from the Black Knights asserting control of Friday night's game late in the third quarter. "We expected a tough game; Windsor has always been a tough place to play," said Norwich coach Tom Collier. "They have a lot of size, and we have trouble with big teams."
Norwich mixed inside play with the three-point shot to turn the game in its favor. Michael Oralls scored a season-high 19 points, nine in the second half as he worked the high-low post game with Jamison Luke and Zan Stewart.
Carlos Ithier hit clutch threes in each of the final two quarters, Jordan Vinal canned a dagger three in the fourth, and Stewart also nailed a pivotal three. Stewart finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Luke scored 10 for Norwich, who remained unbeaten in Southern Tier Athletic Conference division play.
"We were able to execute our offense better in the second half," Collier said. "We didn't play as well in the first half, but we did hit some big shots in the second. We were able to get some stops and steals to change the momentum."
Collier pegged Ithier's defensive ball pressure on Windsor's point guards as critical, although Windsor did manage some success inside with leading scorer Michael Beebe touching up the Tornado for 18 points.
"Credit to Windsor, they had a good game plan for us and played well," Collier said. "They gave us a good battle; we needed to be tested."
Norwich hosts Susquehanna Valley on Tuesday.
Norwich captured the JV game, 83-48, behind 22 points from Michael Carson and 15 from Alex Wehrli.

Sherburne-Earlville 56, Holland Patent 52
SHERBURNE – A fourth-quarter push allowed Sherburne-Earlville to hold off upset-minded Holland Patent in Friday night’s game.
Holland Patent, just a one-win club in Center State Conference play, took the lead by one after a strong third quarter. With S-E’s leading scorer Ben Khoury on the bench mending an injury, the visiting club seemed to take control.
“They challenged us, just like they did up at their place,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard.
Leading by just three with 90 seconds to go, S-E’s Keith Rose had a big offensive rebound and putback. After Rose missed the free throw on a three-point play attempt. Gavin Giroux was fouled on the offensive rebound. Giroux hit two free throws to secure the win. Holland Patent nailed a meaningless three as time ran down.
“We’ve done a good job of finishing games, but as a one-win team, Holland Patent has played us as well as anyone in our division,” Vibbard said.
Khoury, who returned in the fourth quarter, led S-E with 18 points, and Brady Elderkin finished with 13.
The Marauders face Sauquoit Valley Wednesday.

Edmeston 68, G-MU 21
COPES CORNERS - G-MU will surely try to put the memory of its first quarter with Edmeston Friday behind it in a hurry.
The Panthers piled up a 29-0 lead after one quarter, and led 41-4 at the halftime break. "I'd be surprised if they missed more than one shot in the first quarter," said G-MU coach Greg Bonczkowski of Edmeson. "Everything they put up went in the basket. It's not like we were giving them 15 points on layups. There were contested shots."
Conversely, the Raiders were ice-cold from the field for two quarters. "We had good offensive sets and good looks in the first half, and they didn't go in," Bonczkowski said. "My guys got a little deflated by that."
To the Raiders' credit, they had their best quarter after halftime outscoring the Panthers, 14-10. "We talked at halftime about pride and competing, and we set a goal of winning the third quarter," Bonczkowski said. "We were able to do that."
G-MU hosts Bainbridge-Guilford today in a non-league game.

AFTON – Jordan Harrington scored a career-high 29 points for Greene, and Luke Erickson along with Joe Miranda also reached double figures scoring in Saturday’s victory over Afton.
“We played great man-to-man defense in the first half, but were forced to play some zone in the second half due to foul trouble,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We gave up some threes, but overall, we played well.”
Erickson added 13 points and Miranda tacked on 12. Greene plays at Delhi Wednesday.

Otselic Valley 72, DeRuyter 70
Tyburn Academy 62, Otselic Valley 53
SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley stole a page from North Carolina State's 1983 national championship win over Houston.
On the final possession of the game, the Vikings scored on an impromptu bucket, much like Lorenzo Charles did for the Wolfpack.
After DeRuyter banged home a three to tie the game at 70, OV inbounded the ball with 24 seconds left, eschewing a timeout. "We tried to set up a play to free someone up inside, and that didn't work," said OV coach Dave Loomis of the final play. "We tried something else, that didn't work well, either."
What resulted was an airball from long range that was caught just under the basket by Vikings reserve Chris O'Hara, who put the ball in left-handed - his only two points - with 0.5 seconds left for the game-winner.
Austin Reynolds scored a career-high 25 points for OV in the victory, who extended its winning streak to four games. Angel Marshall added 17 points, and Matt Neal had 12. "It was a game that could've gone either way, and sometimes you win games like this," Loomis said. "DeRuyter played really well, but we'll take it."
Saturday, Tyburn Academy controlled the fourth quarter to halt the Vikes’ four-game winning streak. Matt Faiola led Tyburn with 24 points. “We were a little shorthanded with injuries and kids that couldn’t make the game,” Loomis. “We were playing on a college-sized court and we had some tired legs, but Tyburn is a pretty good team leading its division, and we stayed with them most of the game.”
Neal poured in 23 points to lead OV, and Jordan Baerga finished with 13.

Norwich 78, Windsor 41
NORWICH – In between the whistles, Norwich was pretty good Friday night in a foul-marred blowout victory over Windsor.
The Tornado jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the game's first four minutes. Carin Kuhn had the opening two buckets, one off a steal, Caitlyn Brown hit a three, Shelby Benjamin had a three-point play, and Makenzie Maynard scored to end the early spurt.
Windsor made just four field goals in the game, but converted 33 foul shots on 48 attempts benefiting for 36 Norwich personal fouls. All told, 55 fouls were called in the game. "I was very happy to hold them to just four field goals for the game, regardless of how many fouls we committed," said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. "That tells me we are making the other team earn it."
Kuhn scored a season-high 16 points to lead the Purple Tornado, Maynard had 15, and Savannah Williams had 14 in a reserve role. Shelby Benjamin added eight points, five rebounds, and five steals. "I was happy with the effort, the energy, and intensity," Bennett said. "That's something we have talked about a lot the past few days, and to see them being that into the game made me happy."

SHERBURNE - Holland Patent's top three scorers accounted for 48 points in a road victory over Sherburne-Earlville (11-5) Friday night.
Holland Patent erased an early eight-point deficit taking the lead for good in the third quarter, and building the advantage up to nine points in the fourth. "I thought we played a good first half, but defensively, we had some letdowns and missed assignments," said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. "You can't have those against good teams."
Lilly Berg had 19 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots for S-E, but all but two of her points were in the first half. Savannah Irwin scored 23 for the Marauders, 16 of those coming in the second half.
