Firefighters recognized

NORWICH – Members of the City of Norwich Fire Department stand with Mark Hitchcock after being recognized for their heroic actions by the Norwich Fire Chief and City Council at a meeting of the City Council last week.
Assistant Chief Jan Papelino (missing from the photo), Captain Jeff Steward, Firefighters Zach Miner, Robert Barnes and Tim Llewellyn were recognized for their heroic actions in rescuing Mr. Hitchcock from a garage fire on Dec. 20, 2014, in the Town of Norwich.
Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo said, “Had they not reacted quickly, Mr. Hitchcock would have most certainly succumbed to the heavy fire and smoke that had him trapped in his garage. It was a proud day for the City of Norwich Fire Department.”
Mayor Joseph Maiurano publicly read a letter sent to Chief Chawgo by Hitchcock’s family thanking them for their actions. The letter stated, "As a result of their quick response and training, my husband is alive and recovering and our family celebrated Christmas instead of being in morning. These brave men are true heroes. For their dedication, training and devotion to duty and bravery, our family will forever be grateful.”
