SPCA to hold 11th annual Valentine's Day Fur Ball at Country Club
NORWICH – On Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, from 7-11 p.m., the Chenango SPCA (CSPCA) will host its annual Valentine Fur Ball fundraiser at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich.
This years event is themed “The Great Gatsby” and organizers ask everyone to come dressed in their best roaring 20s attire. “We are encouraging people to dress up,” said Fur Ball chairperson and CSPCA board member, Nancy Swertfager. “We are going to have prizes for the best gangster and for the best flapper costume.” The prizes for the gangster costume will be a Southern Tier Harley Davidson shirt, and the prize for the best flapper costume will be a $25 gift certificate.
The Fur Ball promises an elegant, heart-filled evening featuring a variety of live entertainment and light gourmet fare.
Entertainment this year will be the band Splash, a Binghamton based party band, and Phoenix Project Dance, a Norwich based professional dance group. Both groups will be performing throughout the evening.
Guests will enjoy light cuisine, including a pasta bar, an entree bar, a mashed potato bar, and “pawsitively” delicious dessert bar. A cash bar will be available for alcoholic beverages.
In addition, portrait and group commemorative photos will be available by Gerry Raymonda Photography of Unadilla.
The Fur Ball will also feature a silent auction with a variety of items for everyone. Some of the items being auctioned off are an overnight stay in Lake George, Syracuse University basketball tickets, an Adirondack train ride, a men's watch, and a woman's watch. Swertfager also said that there will be something special for the New York Giants fans in attendance.
The Fur Ball organizers have added a couple of new features to this year's event. Firstly, The Fur Ball will have a casino room this year. The casino room will be run by SUNY Morrisville's Casino Management program. Attendees will be able to purchase chips at the event and then play a variety of casino games, including blackjack, poker, and roulette.
New also to this years event is a wine draw. In a wine draw, participants buy tickets for $20 apiece. Participants then choose one bottle of wine from a variety of bottles that are all wrapped up, hiding what kind of wine is in the bottle. “Some of the bottles are worth more than $20 and some are worth less, said Swertfager. “You don't know what you will be getting.”
“I am really excited with all the new things that we have this year,” said Swertfager. “We have really stepped it up.”
Admission to the Fur Ball is $60 for individuals and $100 per couple. Tickets are available online at chenangospca.org or by calling the shelter at 334-9724 ext. 6. “We have sold out in the past,” warns Swertfager, “So get your tickets as soon as you can.” After Feb. 6, interested persons are urged to call the shelter to find out about availability before ordering.
The Fur Ball is the largest fundraiser of the year for the CSPCA. All proceeds from the event go to benefit the shelter. “All the money goes for animal care, medications, spaying and neutering, and our outreach and education programs,” said Courtney Sullivan, former CSPCA board President and current board member.
The SPCA is a non-profit organization and it depends heavily on grants, donations, and fundraisers, said Sullivan. “The SPCA is funded entirely by Chenango County residents,” added Swertfager.
While the Fur Ball may be the biggest annual fundraiser for the shelter, it is not the only one. The next fundraiser planned for the SPCA is Rock in the Park in Bainbridge, scheduled for July of 2015. “The SPCA has been chosen as the recipients for the proceeds from Rock in the Park,” said Swertfager. This is an exciting event for the shelter, and more details will follow as the actual date grows nearer. The shelter also has their Par fore Pets golf tournament scheduled for Saturday, July 25 of this year as well.
This year's Fur Ball is sponsored by Staffworks, Wells Fargo, Rapid Reproductions, Mirabito, NBT-Mang Insurance, Visions Federal Credit Union, Blueox, NBT Bank, Chobani, Burrell's Excavating, The Pennysaver, The Evening Sun, and Air Temp.
