Create snow shelters with help from Friends of Rogers
SHERBURNE – Join Friends of Rogers at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne to learn common, but important, snow shelter building techniques.
A good snow shelter can provide ample protection in the midst of a snowball barrage. Likewise, in an emergency, those same shelter design skills can help insulate you from the cold, and possibly even save your life.
“Snow is one of nature's best insulators,” said Sarah Freedman, Friends of Rogers environmental educator. “Knowing the proper way to construct a snow shelter can allow you to create a space that will remain 32 degrees inside, regardless of the temperature outside.”
Once visitors learn how to build a snow shelter, they are encouraged to put their new skills into practice to build their own fort before the snow balls fly, Freedman said.
“Snow shelters can be built with minimal equipment and basic training,” said Simon Solomon, Friends of Rogers executive director. “This engaging Family Fun Program is a definite cure for cabin fever.”
Friends of Rogers Family Fun Programs are held the first and third Saturday of every month at 10:30 a.m. and last approximately one hour. Recent events have included The Expedition for the Lost Treasure of Rogers, Birds of the Snow, Winter Science, The Night Stalkers, and The Hunt for the Four-Hoofed Multi-Pronged Ungulate. Family Fun Programs are an opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience hands-on learning and exploration of the natural environment.
The Rogers Center in Sherburne is operated by Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers educational programs for all ages. Seasonal winter hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 674-4733 or visit FriendsofRogers.org.
