Section IV Class B
ONEONTA – Norwich won its first Class B title in 19 years a season ago. After Saturday’s second straight title, this one by a whopping 70 points, the team title is becoming an expectation.
Five NHS wrestlers earned championshipa, and 13 kids placed among the top five in their respective weight class to advance to this weekend’s Section IV Tournament.
“It’s been our expectation all year long,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch of the team title. “That was our goal, now we’ve moved on to a higher goal.”
Dalen Geislinger (113), Tristan Rifanburg (145), and Frankie Garcia (152) repeated last year’s championship wins, and for the two latter athletes, Class B titles have become old hat. Winning their first Class B crowns were Ty Rifanburg (120) and Cole Rifanburg (132).
Winners by just 15 points in team scoring a season ago, Norwich outpolled runner-up Susquehanna Valley for a clearcut victory. “The way we’ve been wrestling, and I felt pretty comfortable about our chances,” Hagenbuch said. “But you never know for sure; that’s why you wrestle the matches.”
All five Norwich champions won as number one seeds, and other than Cole Rifanburg’s 4-1 decision win over Maine-Endwell’s Austin Sullivan, none of the finals matches were close.
Team scoring: Norwich, 233.5; Sus Valley, 163.5; Oneonta, 159.5; Chenango Valley, 147.5; Owego, 140.5; Windsor, 136; Maine-Endwell, 121; Waverly, 85; Dryden, 70.5.

Section III Class C Tournament
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s Jack Buell (195) and Cole Mikalunas (285) left the home faithful smiling winning Section III Class C titles on the Marauders’ home mats Saturday evening.
Buell, in a rematch with General Brown’s Ricardo Dawkins from earlier this season, validated his pinfall victory from the Eastern States Classic with a third-period pin.
Leading 14-5 late in the third, Dawkins, from the top riding position, faked an attempt to let Buell up. Buell reversed Dawkins quickly and turned it into a quick pin at the 5:30 mark. “I think there were people who might have thought (that pin at Eastern States) was a fluke,” said Sherburne-Earlville coach Bim Palmer. “He pinned him again, so this shows where Jack is at.”
Mikalunas’ victory was perhaps the upset of the day, and his win drew thunderous applause as the tourney drew its curtain. Unseeded and filling in a varsity spot after spending much of the last two seasons on junior varsity, the junior wrestler had just a .500 record entering the tournament, and was facing a kid who pinned him two weeks earlier, Owen Albanese of Canastota.
Trailing 1-0 entering the third, Mikalunas escaped early in the final frame, and battled in the clinch for the rest of the period. With two seconds left, Mikalunas scored the pin for the stunning victory. “He’s a smart kid who works hard, and it has helped a lot that he’s wrestling in practice every day with two champs (Buell and Garrett DuVall),” Palmer said of Mikalunas.
DuVall finished second at 220 pounds to advance to next week’s Section III tourney, and Darren Knapp (170) was fourth to also qualify.
Team scores: General Brown, 210; Canastota, 183; Skaneateles/Tyburn Academy, 166; Morrisville-Eaton, 134.5; Port Byron/Union Springs, 120.50; Holland Patent, 114.50; Hannibal, 104; Lowville, 90; Sherburne-Earlville, 89; Herkimer/Sauquoit Valley, 55; Onondaga/Tully 46; APW/Pulaski, 20; Jordan-Elbridge, 14.
