Relay for Life of Chenango County to kickoff the 2015 fundraising year

NORWICH – The Relay for Life of Chenango County will usher in the 2015 fundraising season this Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Morrisville State College community room on Conkey Ave. in Norwich.
The kickoff event is open to the public and is for anybody in the community who may be interested in learning more about The Relay for Life. The event will host past teams and team captains, new teams and team captains, Relay for Life of Chenango County committee members, an informational meeting, and a question and answer session for attendees. Kristina Shaw, Relay for Life Event Chair, said, “all ages are welcome at the kickoff event – bring your kids.”
The purpose of the event is to launch the 19th year of the Relay for Life here in Chenango County and to inform the public, and Relay participants, about this year's event. “At the kickoff event, we will introduce the committee, lay out our goals for the year, give details and requirements for event participation, and provide different goals for teams to achieve throughout year,” said Shaw.
“Relay for Life is really a worldwide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society,” said Helen Gregory, the American Cancer Society Staff Partner for Chenango County's event. “It’s the largest fundraiser of it’s kind in the world and it’s where we raise most of our money to go toward research, education, advocacy, and services for our cancer patients.”
The Relay for Life is an ongoing event. Participants raise funds throughout the year, but the actual Relay will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich.
“What teams do is that they come now to kickoff, find out some things going on this year,” said Gregory. “They pick up their fundraising packets, and then they raise funds – could be bake sales, dinners, dress-downs at work – all kinds of things. Anything to raise funds for this event.”
The goal for the 2015 relay is to raise $140,000 to beat last years $135,555. They are also looking to increase the number of teams from last year's 45 to 50 for 2015. Furthermore, Shaw added that they are hoping to sign up more survivors for this year's event. “Relay events are designed to show appreciation to our survivors,” said Shaw. “So our event holds a survivor dinner. We would like to have 150 survivors showing as registered participants to our event this year.”
This year's Relay will be a daytime event rather than the overnight event that it has been for the past 18 years. This year's Relay will run from 10 a.m to midnight. Despite the time change of the Relay, people familiar with the event can still expect to see some of the same activities. “The Relay will still have a Luminaria ceremony, the survivor dinner, and live entertainment, among a variety of other activities for attendees,” said Shaw.
Shaw also wanted to make it clear that the Relay itself is open to everyone. “People can just stop in off the street, take a few laps around the track, buy a Luminaria bag, talk to people, meet some survivors, be there for the Luminaria ceremony – just embrace the whole Relay experience,” said Shaw. “You don’t have to be associated with a team to come down and enjoy the event – it is open to the public.”
For folks who cannot make the kickoff event and are interested in forming a team for 2015's Relay, or for those who just want more general information about the Relay, can contact event organizers at 800-227-2345 or send an email to Relay.Chenango@gmail.com.
