Huggins’ 300 game leads Norwich to B title

Bowling

VESTAL – Led by Corey Huggins' career-best performance, Norwich's boys bowling team captured the Section IV Class B title Friday afternoon at Midway Lanes.
Huggins opened his day with a perfect 300 game, followed with a 221, and eclipsed the 800 barrier for his series finishing off the best individual series of the day rolling a 289 to fashion an 810 triple.
Norwich had three other bowlers roll well above their averages as well. Brendon Budd's 268 final game gave him a 661 series; Matt Gladstone racked up a 660 series, and Dylan Gladstone tossed a three-game 649.
Norwich amassed 3,258 pins for three games, well over 300 pins above its season-best, and 96 pins clear of runner-up Waverly.
Through two games, the Tornado keglers and Waverly were knotted at 2,132 pins. Big final games from Huggins and Budd allowed Norwich to bring home the victory. "All three of our individual games were better than anything we rolled this season," said Norwich coach Art Rigas. "The kids were buzzing."
Jacasa Currie rolled a 508 series for Norwich leading the Tornado girls to a fourth-place finish in the Class B team event. Currie had a high game of 215, and Alyssa Welch added a 205 game.

Class B
OWEGO – Killian Benedict re-broke the 100-yard backstroke record that he eclipsed in the Class B prelims earlier in the week placing second overall in 55.45 seconds, Saturday at Owego.
Benedict also had a runner-up finish in the 100-yard free timing 50.05 seconds. Jon Manwarren and Dan Zieno went third and fifth respectively in the 200-yard freestyle setting new personal-bests in each race. Manwarren timed 1:54.30, and Zieno finished in 1:55.09.
"We were definitely happy with the performances," said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher, who said his team had 16 personal-best times over the two days of the Class B meet. "Just about everyone dropped time."
Norwich's 400 free relay team of Dan Zieno, Connor Supensky, Manwarren, and Benedict also significantly lowered their best time of the season placing third in 3:35.67. That was also just under last year's sectional place-winning team in the same event.
"The whole team contributed all the way through, and we're looking rosy for next season," Diefenbacher said. "We just need a few more bodies."
Team scoring: Maine-Endwell, 596, Owego 480, Oneonta 221, Norwich 201; Chenango Valley 181; Windsor 173; Johnson City, 110; Sus Valley, 80.

Class C
Greene's Garrett Mowatt broke a six-year-old team record in the 100-yard butterfly lifting the Trojans to a sixth-place finish at the Class C meet Saturday.
Mowatt lowered the butterfly mark by over 1 1/2 seconds in becoming the first Greene swimmer to eclipse the one-minute barrier in that event timing 59.89 seconds.
The Trojans' 200-yard free relay team of Ryan Markham, Kurt Hendershott, Craig Lord, and Scott Lord notched a third as well clocking 1:39.97, just off the school record. Hendershott, Mowatt, Craig Lord, and Liam Reid placed fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:56.54), the other top-four finish for Greene.
"It was a very satisfying season, and the majority of the team is underclassmen," said Greene coach Mike Platta. "We expect to continue the momentum we started this year."
Team scoring: Lansing, 431; Chenango Forks, 373.5; Waverly, 305; WG 293 Odessa-Montour, 201; Greene, 198.5. SC, 111; Spencer-Van Etten, 22.
