Community forum to address education concerns tonight at S-E

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville Central School District will host a community forum on tonight to give parents and community members a chance to voice their concerns when it comes to the future of their children’s education.
The forum will held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the auditorium at the SE High School in Sherburne.
Organizers say this is an opportunity to let elected officials know what is expected of them as they examine the state’s 2015-2016 budget.
State Senator James Seward will be present among teachers, parents, and other elected officials to discuss the future of public education across the state.
As a longstanding member of the senate Education Committee, Seward advocates for fair funding in upstate schools and education programs to give students more opportunities post graduation. Seward also helped enact several reforms to the contentious Common Core learning standards.
This year, one of Senator Seward’s leading priorities is the elimination of the Gap Elimination Adjustment which he says is a fiscal gimmick that has cost area school districts millions of dollars since it was first imposed in 2009.
“I voted against the GEA when it was first passed and have been working to erase this curse on our local schools ever since,” Seward said. “This hurtful policy was simply a cash-grab by the state that has left schools reeling and trying to recover from the day it was enacted.”
