More than 50 vendors to set up shop at Oxford HS this weekend

OXFORD – Maintaining a balance of tradition and school spirit is, without question, becoming a more difficult ruse to pull off, especially given ever-rising costs and shrinking budgets faced by many schools.
The yearly chronicle of those all important high school memories continues to be a staple among our youth – and it's no wonder. Yearbooks are invaluable cherished keepsakes that follow many a graduate for the balance of their lives.
In Oxford, when times get tough, the tough get creative. And that's exactly the sentiment the Oxford yearbook staff employed to ensure that future classes of graduates could continue to have something to hold from their youth.
In a unique effort to keep yearbook costs down for this year's Oxford High School students, Oxford High Library Assistant Melissa Gross has been hard at work planning what she's calling the “First Annual Craft Fair and Indoor Yard Sale,” to be held this Saturday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school gymnasium located at 50 S. Washington Ave.
For the past few months, Gross has been coordinating with some 50-plus vendors to bring the craft fair and indoor yard sale into fruition, and has been pleasantly surprised with the amount of cooperation and support from the community.
“I was thrilled with the amount of vendors that wanted to participate in the sale. Being the first time I've organized, I wasn't expecting such a fantastic turnout; but the response has been great,” said Gross.
Gross attributes the success of filling vendor slots to the speed of small town word-of-mouth combined with social media networking.
With the wrath of mother nature's arctic fury still upon us, the conception of the yard sale is a fair nod to the warm days of summer and finding a great bargain and mingling with others from the community—all while raising much needed funds to shore-up the business end of the yearly publication.
“People are getting very excited about the sale, plus it's a good break from the usual candy and candle-type fundraisers that everyone is so familiar with,” said Gross.
Admission into the sale is $1 per person, which also includes entry for a door prize. Patrons need not be present to win. Cheese pizza, vegetarian chili along with other snacks and drinks will be available throughout the duration of the event.
Representative vendors participating at the event include: Avon, Charmaine Lee Photography, G.G. Willow soaps, Hats by Eek, Jeannie Bean Creations, Knapp Knoll Woodworks, Mary Kay, Pink Zebra, Red Barn Alpaca Products, Sarah's Signs Home Decor, Sew Inspirational Crafts, Sweetfern Handmade, The Impish Grin, Wilcox Maple, Young Living Essential Oils, Zyto Compass, 31 Products.
“I think anyone that decides to come out will be very pleased with the variety of products offered. Fine art, clothing, foods, demonstrations – lots of unique and one-of-a-kind pieces will all be up for grabs in one convenient location. It's going to be a great time,” said Gross.
