GSW wrestlers win titles; 22 qualify for NYWAY state meet
CHENANGO COUNTY – Saturday, the Gladiators School of Wrestling had two club members win NYS-USA Wrestling state championship titles last weekend.
Tyler Rice, 11, Norwich, captured the 120-pound novice division winning all three of his matches by pin, and John Drapaniotis, 7, Mount Upton, won the 60-pound bantam division recording a takedown in overtime for his championship victory.
Sunday, the GSW had 22 wrestlers compete in the NYWAY Region Tournament for an opportunity to earn a spot in the NYWAY state meet March 14-15 at Ithaca College.
All 22 wrestlers obtained qualifying finishes with 17 winning individual titles.
Champions were Ryan Ferrara (Chenango Forks), John Drapaniotis (Mount Upton), Timothy O'Connor (Maryland), Nate Merwin (Walton), Joey Rumola (Deposit), Ben Menard (Sherburne), Andrew Brown (Norwich), Dante Geislinger (Norwich), Troy Spratley (Bainbridge-Guilford), Michael Squires (Norwich), Brody Oleksak (Afton), Bryce Bracchy (Delhi) Tyler Rice (Norwich), Lucas Scott (Chenango Forks), Chandler Merwin (Walton), Joshua Johnson (Walton) and Austin Merwin(Walton).
Earning second-place finishes Alexis Thayer (Otego), Trevor Thayer (Otego), and Max Morris (Norwich), while third-place finishers were Ashton Jenkins (Norwich) and River Burgess (Deposit).
