Amateur Radio License course offered in Norwich

NORWICH – The Chenango Valley Amateur Radio Association, Inc. (CVARA) will be hosting
a class in Amateur Radio for all ages beginning Saturday, March 21, 2015, at the Emergency Operations Center at 18 East Main St. in Norwich.
The course will run for 2 Saturdays – March 21 and 28 – and will provide attendees with the basic information on the use and science of Amateur Radio. Classes will run from 8 a.m to noon each Saturday. Sessions will feature both classroom and hands-on learning. Pre-registration for the class is requested, but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted.
The License Testing session will immediately follow the March 28 class, and will commence at approximately 1:30 p.m.
Amateur Radio has become the backbone of emergency communications in the United States. Ham radio facilitates assistance in many local disasters, as it did in the recent flooding that took place in our area, and communications with the International Space Station are even possible.
The instructors for the course will be American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Certified Instructor, Ray Darling (K2DAR) with Assistant Instructors Tom Monday (KC2SFU), John Rudolph (N2YP), and Chuck Davenport, Sr. (N2CHD).
After completing the course, students that pass an FCC exam will earn the Amateur Radio Technician class license. The only course fee is your cost of purchasing the appropriate textbook. To take the exam, a $15 fee is mandatory, due the morning of the exam. As incentives to take the course and exam, CVARA will offer a free one year membership to CVARA upon passing the exam. Come join in a great learning experience.
For more information concerning registration and purchase of textbooks, testing date etc., contact Ray Darling (K2DAR) by phone at 895-6560 (between 4 and 6 p.m. Daily), or e-mail at k2dar@arrl.net.
