Norwich boys and girls sweep CV, Cincy
Track and Field
NORWICH – Norwich swept its way to relatively easy victories in a three-way meet with visiting Chenango Valley and Cincinnatus Tuesday at Norwich High School.
The Tornado boys topped CV 88-53 and Cincy 130-5; while the girls compiled wins of 98-40 and 115-20 respectively.
Based on prior times heading into the meet, Norwich coach Shaun Horan estimated a nip-and-tuck battle with CV's boys. "On paper, I had them ahead of us by three to five points, and that is with us at our best," Horan said. "I thought it would be really competitive, but the boys obviously did a fantastic job today."
Ben Ericksen captured the 1600- and 3200-meter races, and Norwich junior David Bernstein fought through a hamstring injury to capture the shot put and discus.
On the girls' side, Norwich overcame numerous injuries and the absence of three top scoring performers to remain unbeaten in meet competition this season.
Freshman Emily Shattuck took the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, while senior Morgan Hagenbuch one-upped the young plebe with four total wins capturing both hurdles races along with the long jump and triple jump.
Other girls finding the win column in individual events were Kristen Slate, Kara Evans, Katelyn Shaver, and Liz Eddy. "Once the girls learned about the injuries today, it just seemed to fuel the fire," Horan said. "We're a little short on numbers, but the girls are having fun and staying really focused."
Norwich competes in the Sidney invite this Friday.
