Felon sent to prison for possessing more than 100 grams of cocaine
NORWICH – A Rome man who was found with 110.9 grams of cocaine, 10 glassine envelopes of heroin, a stolen flat screen TV and sound system in 2013 pleaded guilty and was sent to prison for five years as a second felony offender.
28-year-old Hennessy C. Hawkins of Rome was indicted in December of 2013 for two counts of the class B felony of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, the class D felony of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree and two counts of the class A misdemeanor of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
It was alleged on Oct. 30, 2013 on County Road 32 in the Town of Norwich, Hawkins knowingly and unlawfully possessed more than 500 milligrams of the narcotic drug cocaine with an aggregate weight of 1,109 milligrams, four knotted wraps of more cocaine and 10 glassine envelopes of the narcotic drug heroin.
Hawkins was indicted a couple months later in February of 2014 for the class E felony of criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree.
It was alleged that on Oct. 30, 2013 at a Broad Street residence in the City of Norwich, Hawkins did knowingly and unlawfully possess a Bravia flat screen television and sound system valued at approximately $1,200.
He was arrested in October of 2013 and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility, where he has been incarcerated since. Hawkins faced up to 15 years in prison.
On February 25, 2015, Hawkins pleaded guilty to the reduced counts of the class C felony of attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and the class A misdemeanor of criminal possession of stolen property to satisfy both indictments.
During the court proceeding, Hawkins said he is originally from Georgia and that he has been in treatment for addiction in the past.
Judge Frank B. Revoir, Jr. said Hawkins is a predicate felon and was convicted of the felony of criminal possession of a loaded firearm in the third degree on June 28, 2001 in Oneida County Court.
On April 17, 2015, Hawkins reappeared in court to be sentenced.
District Attorney Joseph A. McBride said Hawkins has a long criminal history and came to the community to sell drugs.
“Drugs have been devastating our community, so he is being removed from our community,” said McBride.
Hawkins was sentenced to a determinate sentence of five years incarceration at the New York State Department of Corrections, less time served, and two years post release supervision for possession of cocaine.
He also was sentenced to a one year definite sentence of incarceration for possession of stolen property to run concurrent with his five year sentence, less time served.
