Oxford comeback against UV falls short

OXFORD – Unadilla Valley got off to a fast start, and needed every bit of that start to hold off Oxford Tuesday.
The Storm, 18-0 winners over Oxford this past Saturday, opened with seven runs in the first inning. The first five baserunners reached by walk or hit, and Jackie Smith, Alex Bodie, and Alysa Mumbulo had RBI hits in succession to kick off the rally.
Bodie finished 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead UV, and Blaize Kolvik had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Lauren Lloyd also had two hits in the win.
"They were aggressive at the start, and they had the confidence after playing us this weekend," said Oxford coach Heather Pizza of UV. "We started hitting the ball as the game wore on, and we picked up our confidence."
Oxford closed with eight runs over the final three innings to come within three runs. Kylie Roys went 4-for-5 in the loss with two RBI, Raigen Ehly had three hits and two RBI, and Layla Kriz homered finished 2-for-3 with a team-best four RBI.
Oxford plays at Walton today.

WINDSOR – Windsor, the top-ranked Class B team in the state, finished off Norwich Tuesday with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth invoking the 15-run mercy rule.
Paige Rauch had three hits and four RBI for the Black Knights, and her two-run homer in the sixth capped her team's scoring.
Danielle Cary added three hits and three RBI in the win. "They're the cream of the crop in our league, at least against the teams we play," said Norwich coach Scott Moore of Windsor. "I was happy with the way we played, we just fell apart in the last inning."
Jordan Sanford singled in Kassidy Seary in the third inning for Norwich's lone run.

GREENE – Greene tied the game with three runs in the sixth, then scored the winner on a wild pitch in the seventh to defeat Harpursville Tuesday.
Down 7-4 entering the sixth. Alyssa Sands singled in the first run, and after a J.B. Taft single and a walk to Laura Durdon, freshman Maddie Brink stroked a two-run single to tie the game.
In the seventh, Sydney Bennett singled to lead off, and moved to second on an error. After a fielder’s choice, Bennett came home on the aforementioned wild pitch.
Durdon, Brink, and Sands all had two hits for Greene. “It was a real character win for us,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “Harpursville is a quality team that has lost some close games. I was very proud of how the girls came back for the victory.”

ITHACA – Unbeaten STAC powerhouse, Ithaca, handed Norwich its first defeat in eight outings this season sweeping all seven points Tuesday.
“We got beat 7-0, but we played some of the best tennis we’ve played all season,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “By not playing this level of competition all season, we just struggled with the big points. The box score and the number of games we won doesn’t indicate our quality of play.”
