Chemistry riddles solved during ‘Kitchen Science’ at Rogers Center
SHERBURNE – How do you get a raisin dancing? What makes glow sticks shine? Why do bakers sprinkle lemon juice on apples when preparing pies?
Join Friends of Rogers at 10:30 a.m. on May 16 to find the answer to these questions and more through simple experiments with materials found around the home.
“People often picture chemists as white-coated scientists combining unusual liquids in a laboratory, but actually we are all chemists!” said Sarah Freedman, Friends of Rogers environmental educator. “This engaging program will illustrate how chemistry concepts can explain everyday life observations.”
“We are very excited that retired chemist T.J. Moorehead will be facilitating experiments for this Family Fun Program,” said Simon Solomon, Friends of Rogers executive director. “T.J. will provide unique insight and practical observations to illustrate the study of matter and the changes it undergoes.”
Family Fun Programs are held at 10:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturday of every month and last approximately one hour. While there is no charge, Friends of Rogers encourages contributions to support future operations. Recent events have included Lazy Planters, Signs of Spring, Egg-cellent Camouflage, Decomposers and Compost and Up-cycled Grocery Bags. Family Fun Programs are an opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience hands-on learning and exploration of the natural environment.
Rogers Center is operated by Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers educational programs for all ages. Seasonal hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call (607) 674-4733 or visit www.FriendsofRogers.org.
