Norwich track team remains unbeaten

ONEONTA – Norwich's track teams remained unbeaten in STAC division meets sweeping wins from Oneonta Tuesday afternoon.
The undefeated Tornado girls, coming off back-to-back invitational titles the previous two weekends, swept all of the field events to overcome the absence of leading sprinter, Emily Shattuck.
"Oneonta has some fast girls and we missed Emily, but we were able to neutralize some of that," said Norwich coach shaun Horan. "We knew we would have to make some points up in the field events, and we did."
Norwich senior Morgan Hagenbuch continued her strong season winning three events, Caroline Stewart picked up two wins, the more important victory coming in the high jump.
Stewart, who had not practiced the high jump since the preseason, won with a leap of 4-8. Katelyn Shaver grabbed wins in the shot put and discus, and Liz Eddy matched her own school record taking the pole vault clearing 7-6.
Oneonta's boys had two standout performers, but that was not nearly enough to overcome Norwich's superior depth up and down the lineup. Event sweeps in the pole vault and long jump gave Norwich 18 points, the bulk of the 25-point win.
"We knew Oneonta had its studs, but even in the events their kids won, we had kids right behind them," Horan said.
Norwich had six different boys come away with individual-event victories, and the Tornado also claimed two of three relays.
"Having both teams undefeated this deep into the season is pretty nice," Horan said. "They're showing a lot of grit and determination."
Norwich competes in the Oneonta Invitational Friday.
