Norwich leads girls’ basketball all-state selections
SYRACUSE – Norwich's top-20 ranking yielded all-state recognition in girls' basketball for the 2014-2015 season.
In a release from the New York State Sports Writers Association Wednesday, Purple Tornado players Meghan Komendarek, Shelby Benjamin, and Makenzie Maynard garnered Class B all-state honors.
Other local cagers earning all-state recognition were Sherburne-Earlville's Lilly Berg, Greene's Katie Carey, and Bainbridge-Guilford's Morgan Bullis.
Komendarek, a sophomore, led the Norwich trio with first team honors, Benjamin, a junior, was selected to the fifth team, and Maynard, a sophomore, earned ninth team accolades.
"This was definitely nice recognition for our team, and justifies the fact that our team was one of the strongest in the state in Class B," said Norwich head coach Josh Bennett. “I’m also excited about the fact that all three are obviously returners, so the future of our program is very strong. This honor offers them a tangible goal of leading our team to places we have never been before next season as they are all among the strongest players in the state in Class B."
Berg, a junior, was Chenango County's leading scorer this past season at over 18 points a game. She was named to the 11th team in Class B.
Bullis, a senior for the Bobcats, helped lead her team to the Midstate Athletic Conference title, and was a sixth team pick in Class C. Carey, a junior for the Trojans, was chosen to the ninth team in Class C.
