Monday Evening Musical Club presents annual recital and scholarship fundraiser

NORWICH – For 106 years, the Monday Evening Musical Club has been setting the stage for aspiring musicians to take the next step by providing scholarships that start their young careers on a high note.
On Monday, May 11, club members will continue that longstanding tradition with a free-will benefit recital starting at 7:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Norwich. This annual event is open to public with all proceeds going directly toward the Monday Evening Musical Club Scholarship fund. Each year, club scholarships are awarded to deserving high school students who plan to pursue a music major in college.
“We are proud that we have been giving scholarships for 106 years now,” said club program coordinator and piano teacher Anita Humer. “This year, we’re honoring Kelly Allaire who will be singing during the recital Monday evening.”
Allaire, a Norwich High School senior, is chiefly recognized by the Monday Evening Musical Club for her ability as a vocalist, however her commitment to music is also seen by her participation as drum major for the NHS marching band, and as a six-year cast and stage crew member of the annual NHS spring time musical.
“I love doing anything, musically,” said Allaire. “After high school, I’ll be attending Mansfield University for music education. I really want to be a music teacher.”
Allaire added her hopes of studying under the university’s most notable musicians and educators, and becoming part of the Mansfield marching band.
In addition to Allaire’s vocal performance, Monday’s recital will feature several of the club’s other advanced students. Norwich students Collin Bussing, a sixth grader, and Nicholas Deady, a sophomore – both of whom are students of Humer’s – will put on piano performances. And Oxford High School students Aaron Mosner and Brianna Dewey, students of music teacher Julie Solomon, will play solos on the saxophone and the french horn.
Norwich vocal students of Meena Conant will also perform. Students include: Aria Maholchic; Antonia Mody; Francesca Salerno; Cassie Corey; Ryan De Tomi; Margaret Dougher; Shane Reynolds; and Kaleigh Watkins.
All those who attend are invited to a reception following Monday’s recital.
