Norwich, M-E deadlocked after first day of Class B tourney

Class B Tournament
ONEONTA – Norwich and Maine-Endwell are locked in a tie for first with 24 team points after Thursday's opening matches in the Section IV Class B Tournament at Oneonta High School.
In doubles play, NHS seniors Colin Stewart and Zan Stewart played to their top seed advancing to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Johnson City's Johnny Nezelek and Kris Kirkpatrick. Tornado seniors Brendon Budd and Alec Weaver, the three seed, did not receive a first-round bye and needed two victories to advance.
Budd and Weaver beat Oneonta's John Scott and Lars Smit, 6-4, 6-4 to join their teammates in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, both Maine-Endwell doubles entries advanced to match Norwich's team points.
Over at singles, Norwich's Matt Craig and Jamison Luke posted victories. Luke won in three sets in the opening round before bowing to top-seeded Freddy Purpora of M-E in the quarterfinals.
Craig won a two-hour marathon matchup against Maine-Endwell's Alec Greene, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
"In the end, Matt just outlasted him," said Norwich coach John Stewart. "Greene played exceptionally well in the first set, but we knew that would level out. Matt was steady and consistent in all three sets."
Play resumes today at 2 p.m., Stewart said.

Three local linksters advance at Section IV Medalist Tournament
ITHACA – Three Chenango County golfers qualified for the second round of the Section IV Medalist Tournament, Thursday at Cornell University Golf Course.
Among the 60-person field, Unadilla Valley sophomore Brenon Maynard, and Norwich sophomores Joseph Mioduszewski and Ryan Johnson earned spots among the final 20 golfers.
Maynard and Johnson, veterans of this tournament from last year, shot 82 and 83 respectively, while Mioduszewski, a first-time entry, shot an 84. "If Ryan and Joe can shoot 80 or better on Saturday, I believe they will finish in the top nine," said Norwich coach David Branham.
Tournament play continues Saturday morning at the course with the low nine aggregate scores earning spots on the Section IV state tournament team. Johnson qualified for one of those elite spots last year.
Leading the field with matching 76s are Nate Wrighter, Windsor; D.J. Griffiths, Susquehanna Valley; and Dan Lapp, Trumansburg. Alone in fourth at 79 is Zach Brand of Elmira Notre Dame.

MADISON – Madison maintained its share of first place in the Central Counties League sweeping a doubleheader from Otselic Valley Wednesday.
Madison broke a 4-4 tie in the second game scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to beat the Vikes. Brett Lewis scored two runs and Logan Snyder had an RBI double.
Jonathan Liuzzo and Connor Smith went 2-for-3 on the OV side.
In the opening game, Madison had back-to-back six-run innings to build a commanding lead over the Vikings.
Gabe Linden was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI to lead Madison. Mike Leverich contributed two hits and three RBI.
Smith again topped OV's hitters with three hits and four runs scored, while Liuzzo went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

MARATHON – Greene earned its eighth win of the season scoring six runs over the final two innings to beat Marathon Thursday.
The Trojans extended their lead with four runs in the top of the sixth. Lydia Howard tripled in Ashley Beebe with the first run, Howard scored on a Laura Durdon single, and Maddie Brink along with Sydney Bennett came in on Brittany Johns’ two-run single.
Howard and Brink had three hits apiece for Greene (8-9), who kept postseason hopes alive with the victory.

LITTLE FALLS – Little Falls charted 20 hits, seven coming in a nine-run third inning in Thursday's victory over visiting Sherburne-Earlville.
Little Falls lead-off hitter Hannah Becker was 4-for-5 with three hits, and number five hitter Kaitlyn Duesler had five hits, four RBI, and four runs scored in the victory. Caira Miles and Arielle Raux also drove in three runs.
"The wheels came off the bus, and we just did not play well," said S-E coach Michelle Parker. "The third inning was like batting practice (for them), and they were teeing off."
Savannah Irwin went 3-for-4 on the S-E side with an RBI, Miranda Wright had two hits and two RBI, and Abbey Beaver along with Sierra Barker collected two hits each.
S-E hosts its cancer awareness fundraiser game today against visiting Adirondack.
