Man arraigned after fleeing to Montana, held on $100K

NORWICH – Charles Brasington, a 37-year-old Bainbridge resident, was arraigned on the class E felony of bail jumping in the second degree and remanded back to the county jail after he allegedly posted an $80,000 bail and fled to Montana where he was arrested last fall.
After a four-month-long investigation in 2013, New York State Police troopers allege Brasington rented nearly $500,000 worth of equipment from Beck Equipment Inc. and never returned the equipment.
According to a lawsuit filed by Beck Equipment Inc., it is alleged Brasington rented six pieces of equipment, which consisted of two excavators, a dozer, a skid steer and a loader backhoe, under the guise of using for his business, Irving Dutch Tree Co. Instead of using it for his business, read the lawsuit, Brasington sold the equipment to a local auction company for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
When Beck Equipment Inc. discovered Brasington no longer had the equipment in his possession, read the lawsuit, the company contacted the New York State Police.
Brasington was charged with four counts of the class D felony of grand larceny in the third degree, three counts of the class C felony of grand larceny in the second degree and scheming to defraud in the first degree.
He allegedly fled to Montana after posting $80,000 cash bail related to the theft charges and was arrested on Oct. 16, 2014 in Montana before being extradited back to Chenango County.
According to the Chenango County Correctional Facility, Brasington is being held at the county jail on $1,000,100 cash bail or $4,000,000 bond.
On May 11, 2015, Brasington was arraigned for the class E felony of bail jumping in the second degree and pleaded not guilty.
It is alleged on Dec. 6, 2013 Brasington did not appear in Chenango County Court for his scheduled court appearance or turn himself voluntarily within 30 days therafter.
“This defendant absconded from the area, and we had to extradite him from the western part of the country,” said District Attorney Joseph A. McBride.
McBride requested a $100,000 cash bail regarding the bail jumping charge, which he said was to secure Brasington for future court appearances. He said Brasington had already posted a large amount of bail in the past and fled the area after posting it.
“There is a prodigious amount of bail already set,” said Brasington's public defender, John Cameron. “There is no chance he going to make anything.”
“In this case, I would ask for $100,000 because of his history,” said McBride.
Judge Frank B. Revoir, Jr. remanded Brasington back to the county jail on $100,000 cash bail or $1,000,000 bond.
