Mack awarded first ever Legion Auxiliary Scholarship

OXFORD – Vada Mack, daughter of Shanie Mack of Oxford, was recently selected as the first recipient of the 2015 Fort Hill American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit #376 scholarship.
Mack is a graduate of Oxford Academy’s Class of 2015. She has been a member of the Oxford EMS Explorers program since 2011 and has been an active member of Oxford Academy’s FFA for her junior and senior years. She has performed very well in high school both academically and athletically on the basketball court.
Mack’s dedication to community service through helping with the Legion’s Sunday Community Breakfast is just one shining example of her integrity to her community. Through her volunteering with the Oxford Explorers Mack not only got an education, but gained satisfaction in helping others. This has motivated Vada to pursue a nursing degree at SUNY Broome in the fall of 2015. Her ultimate wish is to be a maternity nurse.
The ALA Unit 376 sponsored this $500 scholarship, for the first time, to benefit a young female graduating senior of Oxford Academy High School. The scholarship is aimed at helping a veteran’s daughter/granddaughter who is a member (or child of a member) of “The American Legion Family” of Post 376. Students who are following their education/career dreams are of the greatest interest to the ALA, not necessarily those with the best grades or least funds. The American Legion Auxiliary believes that the more knowledge our young people gain, the better citizens they will become. That is why the organization is so committed to education.
As an Auxiliary legacy, Vada’s mother Shanie Mack and grandmother Edwina “Sammy” Diamond are both members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 376. They are eligible for membership through Vietnam Veteran, Richard Diamond, a Legionnaire of Post 376 and Vada’s grandfather.
After reviewing the applicants, ALA Unit 376 president Jeanie Petersen said “Ms. Mack is an exceptional young woman with great potential; truly deserving of the Auxiliary scholarship.”
The ALA would like to thank Christine Gregoire, who chaired the Scholarship Committee, for her help in establishing the award. Also, Kris Kaschak, Oxford Academy High School Counselor, for his advice and assistance. Students can contact Kris for more about this scholarship. (Award is released after the first semester.)
American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves for nearly a century to meeting the needs of our nation’s veterans, military and their families both here and abroad.
