Relay for Life slated for one-day event this weekend

NORWICH – This weekend marks another year of Relay For Life in Norwich. Every year hundreds of people come out to support an event that has touched so many lives.
This year teams from all over Chenango County are coming out to support the charity. “Mad Hatters” team Capitans Kelly Smith and Teri Currie are back for their 17th year of participating in Relay For Life.
“We got into Relay because cancer has effected different members of our team,” said Smith and Currie. Both women said that cancer has hit very close to home for them.
“To us Relay gives us a chance to celebrate that common drive to fight back against the disease,” said both Smith and Currie. The “Mad Hatters” aren’t the only ones who are fighting back as volunteers for Relay For Life have been a continued help in making the fund raiser possible.
Joanie Bradley and Willma Tracey have been each volunteering for the organization for 20 years and 15 years, respectively. Both women who are cancer survivors have done just about everything volunteer-wise for the organization as well.
“Don’t ever give up,” said Bradley to those who are currently battling the disease. “Do what you have to do to fight.” Tracey’s advise was similar, “Take it one day at a time. You can worry about the future later, just deal with today.”
Relay For Life will be taking place this weekend, Saturday July 18, at the Fairgrounds in Norwich. Former chair of the Chenango County chapter of Relay For Life, Marie DeSarro, has been involved in Relay since 2004. “I started out as just helping out with a bunch of different things,” said DeSarro. “From there I eventually became the chair until a few years ago.”
DeSarro and her family have been helping out at various Relays since she was a child. She went on to say that her father was the one who got her involved in the first place.
“We have a family history of cancer,” said DeSarro. “We were always helping out and participating when we were kids.” DeSarro went on to explain that from a very early age it was instilled in her that it was necessary to help the community and becoming involved in events like Relay For Life can help change lives.
“It means so much,” said DeSarro about Relay For Life. “Its crazy to see how much the community is brought together over such a positive event.” According to DeSarro, last year the event raised over $140,000 and they hope to raise just as much this year.
Events kick off at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m. on Saturday July 18 and will run until midnight. Be sure to come and check out all of the activities that are in store for the public as well as take the opportunity to donate.
